Steroid results reveal good news

2007-08 UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report

The UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Report for the 2007-08 school year has been released by the UIL. The statistical report of the testing program that took place between February 2008 and June 2008 includes information such as the total number of tests conducted, the number of positive results and the breakdown of student-athletes tested by sport and gender.

Of the 10,117 tests conducted, there were two (2) confirmed positive results and four (4) unresolved test results. The four unresolved results were reported from the laboratory with Testosterone: Epitestosterone (T:E) ratios greater than 6:1. Follow-up tests are being conducted on the four unresolved cases. Once the follow-up tests are completed, the final results of those tests will be reported as either positive or negative.

For Testosterone, the definition of positive depends on an adverse analytical finding (positive result) based on the methods listed in the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol which shows that the Testosterone is of exogenous origin, or if the ratio of the total concentration of Testosterone to that of Epitestosterone (T:E) in the urine is greater than 6:1, unless there is evidence that this ratio is due to a physiological or pathological condition.

Additionally, there were twenty-two (22) protocol positive results. These protocol positive results occurred as violations of the UIL Anabolic Steroid Testing Program Protocol. Eighteen (18) of these violations were the result of unexcused absences, three (3) were due to refusal of the student-athlete to participate in the collection process and one (1)student-athlete violated protocol by leaving the testing area without cause or approval.

Of the 195 schools where tests were conducted, 6,455 boys were tested representing 12 sports and 3,662 girls were tested representing 12 sports. The sports with the most student-athletes tested were football for males (3,380) and volleyball for females (835). The total number of student-athletes tested for each sport, includes multiple sport participants. Therefore, the individual sport numbers will differ from the total number of athletes tested. Overall, there were 3,454 freshmen student-athletes tested, the most of any grade level.
