Monday Morning QB

Week Five was another great week of Texas High School football.   Things are starting to get interesting with district play starting.  There were two very big games played in Galveston and Lufkin.  Galveston Ball played their first game since Hurricane Ike visited the Texas coast when they hosted Clear Creek.    It was the latest step to getting things back to normal in that area.

Another team that was affected by Ike made a run at history on Friday night.   The 3rd ranked Galena Park North Shore Mustangs (3-0) made a trip to Lufkin to take on the #27 Panthers.  The Mustangs came away with a dramatic win, scoring in the last 22 seconds of the game and broke the record for most consecutive regular season wins.  They have now won 73 in row.  We have said it in our show numerous times and I will say it again.   The Mustangs get a big Lone Star Gridiron salute for taking on the toughest competition available while trying to break the record.   This game against Lufkin was not a scheduled game at the beginning of the season but both teams were looking for a makeup game.  North Shore could have easily scheduled a team they could have beaten with no problem but chose to challenge themselves and take on the best they could find.

In 2A, #5 Hitchcock (2-1) lost but it was to a 5A team!!!   The Bulldogs played the #48 5A Houston Chavez team close though, 41-30.    Staying in 2A, #6 Kirbyville (4-0) keeps impressing by beating yet another 3A team with a 39-6 win over  #19 3A Crockett.  The Wildcats now have victories over #13 3A Diboll, #31 3A Jasper, #137 3A Center and now Crockett.  What happened to the Early Longhorns (2-4)?  They fell once again to Brady 34-24.   They join teams like Wichita Falls Rider, Corpus Christi Calallen and La Marque in not having seasons that everyone expected.

Now on to a team that has been very impressive in 4A.  The 9th ranked Longview Lobos (5-1) beat another very good 4A team with a 32-13 whipping of #14 Sulphur Springs.  They have played one of the toughest schedules in Texas.   They started out with a 21-7 loss to #9 5A Allen.  They then earned wins against #72 5A Tyler Lee (21-0), Shreveport Evangel Christian (52-22),  #27 5A Lufkin (45-37  3 OT), previously #4 4A Texarkana Texas (41-7)  and then their win over Sulphur Springs.  Watch out for the Lobos!!

Another team to watch out for is the Katy Tigers.  They started off the season it terrible fashion.   They lost a tough one to Galena Park North Shore which was not anything to hang your head about but then they lost to #22 The Woodlands 47-0 and everyone was asking if this was the end of the road for Katy.  Now, they have put together 3 consecutive victories including their latest which was a nationally televised game where they beat Cypress Bay, FL 31-6.
