San Benito finished their season at 6-4 and missed out on the playoffs but they are not sitting around doing nothing. They are already looking forward to the 2009 high school football season.
It was announced Wednesday that San Benito's Bobby Morrow Stadium would host the inaugural South Texas Football Kickoff Classic next Aug. 27-29. One game is scheduled for Thursday, one for Friday and three on Saturday.
Only the host Greyhounds are scheduled for now but a press conference will take place in March to announce all 10 teams that would participate in the Classic.
Coordinators of the event mentioned that they have been in contact with McAllen, Los Fresnos, Donna, PSJA, Harlingen and Edcouch-Elsa. They have also talked to teams like Abilene, Dallas Skyline, Dallas Carter, Longview, Allen, Garland and Odessa Permian.
They Valley teams have a great fan base and are trying to step up to the next level.
This classic will join many other such kickoff classics. We counted at least ten last year. Who knows, maybe Lone Star Gridiron should have a kickoff classic next year also.
