Boerne Selects New Head Coach

Boerne

Boerne High School will re-open this year and their new Head Coach will be Dane Johnson. Johnson will have time to settle in since they will not play varsity football until 2010.

Boerne High School was closed for one year (2008) and the football team was combined with the Samuel V. Champion unit last season where they finished the season 6-4.

Over 50 applicants applied for the position. Johnson will be leaving Lewisville Hebron where he was the defensive coordinator this past season. The Hawks has won a state title in 2005 (4A DII 28-0 victory over Corpus Christi Calallen) while Johnson has been on staff.

Johnson played at Southlake Carroll where the team won a state championship in the 90′s and then he went on to play at Texas Tech University.

QB Connor Wood gives verbal to Longhorns

Houston Second Baptist’s Connor Wood has committed to the University of Texas. The 6-4, 210-pound junior quarterback, entertained offers from schools including Oklahoma, Stanford, LSU and Georgia, but gave a verbal commitment to UT Wednesday night.

Last season, Wood threw for 2,248 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions while completing 62.8 percent of his passes. He guided the Second Baptist Eagles to a 9-3 mark and a TAPPS 4-II district title. With another year of high school remaining, Wood has already tallied 5,748 yards and 54 touchdowns.

The Longhorns appear to be in good shape at quarterback for a few years after signing Lone Star Gridiron’s #1 ranked QB, Garrett Gilbert (Austin Lake Travis) for this season, while Wood joins Colt McCoy’s younger brother, Case McCoy (Graham) as signal callers for the class of 2010.

2009 Player of the Year Predictions – 3A

The 2008 season saw two unlikely (and first-time) State Champions in Carthage and Prosper.  But seeing as both these teams were senior dominated and we’re talking about 2009 MVP’s we’ll have to look to so other programs for possible Players of the Year.  In 3A, the quarterback position will most likely provide our POY.

First up, 3A Division I State Semifinalist Cuero is returning Tyler Arndt for his senior year.  Arndt is my odds on favorite to be named Player of the Year for one reason.  Look at the program.  The Gobblers are graduating a lot of talent (Jake Rangnow & Robert Armstrong) and half of the linemen from 2008 are on the way out as well.  But make no doubt that Head Coach Mark Reeve has the next crop of playmakers ready to go.  Reeve has consistently produced great teams that go deep into the playoffs every year.  With Arndt returning along with soon-to-be Sophomore Trent Jackson at Running Back, the Gobblers offense won’t skip a beat.

The other quarterback that’s on my watch list has already made headlines across the state.  Graham’s Case McCoy, who recently committed to the University of Texas, is returning for his senior year with the Steers.  It will be McCoy’s fourth year at starting QB under the guidance of his Head Coach father.  History has shown that most kid’s that start 4 years at quarterback end their career with a pretty good season.  We’ll see if the elder McCoy has built a good team for Case to lead into the postseason, but they will have a tough time getting there in district 2-3A.  McCoy will run away with the district 2-3A district MVP title, but capturing the Offensive Player of the Year will be difficult considering the competition he’ll have to face.

Other possible 2009 Player of the Year Candidates are; Running Back Corbin Green who lead Bridgeport to an undefeated regular season, 1-3A MVP Tae Richerson from Lubbock Cooper who’s coming back for a Junior campaign, and Silsbee QB Jeremy Johnson who’s already getting tons of looks (and offers) from D-1 programs.

Undoubtedly, there will be a complete surprise that will show up by week three that will catch our eye, but that’s why we’re here!  I can’t wait for 2009 to get here!

Waco Head Coach Resigns

Waco head coach Johnny Tusa resigned today after 23 years as the head coach of the Lions. As the head coach of the lions, his teams advanced to the playoffs in 19 of 23 years.

In 2006, his team made it all the way to the 4A Division II state championship game. Tusa had an overall 181-86-2 record for a .677 winning percentage.

He also coached as an assistant at Richfield and University high schools and was the head coach at Reicher and Jefferson-Moore high schools.

Austin Area coaching moves

The Austin High Maroons announced the addition of a new Head Coach.  Leander Offensive Coordinator L.D. Williams will take over the head job on Monday, replacing the departed Rodney Vincent.  Vincent left Austin High to take over at Cedar Park Vista Ridge in District 25-5A.

Austin Travis also saw their Head Coach depart to Leander.  Drew Sanders will take the reigns at the new Leander Vandegrift,  leaving Travis in the hands of Defensive Coordinator Armando Jacinto.

Two other Austin area school lost their Head Coaches to retirement.  Westlake’s Derek Long is retiring after 6 years as head coach, and Georgetown’s Phil Blue will stay on as Athletic Director and is now looking for his replacement at Head Coach.

Austin McCallum also has a vacancy at Head Coach after Pat Honeycutt’s sudden passing.

Ganders Hire Polytechnic Coach

Baytown Lee

Baytown Lee has hired Marvin Sedberry as the replacement for Dick Olin. Sedberry has been the Fort Worth Polytechnic Parrots head coach for the last two years and has led them to a 7-12 record.

Before Sedberry’s arrival from Lake Highlands, where he was offensive coordinator, Polytechnic had won only two games in the previous three seasons.
