2009 — Year End Review

Wow!! What a season 2009 was. Texas High School football did not disappoint anyone. Here is a recap of some of the highlights from the season.

Converse Judson and Pilot Point extended their Consecutive Winning Seasons to 33 years. They are both in the top 3 all-time now.

36-Plano, 1960-95
33-Converse Judson, 1977-2009
33-Pilot Point, 1977-2009
.
Gilmer, Bushland and Austin Lake Travis all get into the top 10 all-time for most points scored in a season including the playoffs.
.
Austin Lake Travis was the only school to 3-peat as Katy and Canadian both fell in championship games. In a re-match of last years 4A Division I Championship game, Austin Lake Travis pulled out a 24-17 victory this year after winning last years game 48-23. The Cavaliers join Waco (1925-1927), La Marque (1995-97) and Southlake Carroll (2004-2006) as being winners of 3 consecutive championships. Sealy (1994-1997) and Celina (1998-2001) are the only schools to win 4 in a row.
.
All eyes were on how will G.A. Moore do at Aubrey? Moore retired in 2004 with the most coaching victories in Texas High School History with 404 wins. He did o.k. I guess only starting out the season with 5 consecutive shutouts and leading Aubrey to 11-2 record which was the most wins in school history (8 wins was their most before 2009). One of the highlight games of the year was when Aubrey played Pilot Point where Coach Moore had coached at for 20 years.
.
How many more consecutive games can Austin Lake Travis win? They are currently in 4th place all-time with 46 consecutive wins.
.
Did Darren Allman make a good choice in leaving Odessa Permian where he had back to back 12-1 seasons to take over at Austin Westlake? Westlake had gone 16-9 during that same time. Permian went 8-4 this season under the leadership of Gary Gaines (Friday Night Lights fame) while Allman led Westlake to the 5A Division I Championship game. Westlake lost to Euless Trinity 41-38 in OT and is now 1-6 in championship games.
.
Cayuga Running Back Traylon Sheed made a run at history. He entered the season needing 3739 yards to break the all time rushing record and 35 more Touchdowns to break the all-time Touchdown record. He fell a little short of the rushing record but he did take over the #2 spot with 10,356 yards. He did break the TD record by 10 touchdowns finishing his career with 246 of them.
.
Denton Ryan Quarterback Scotty Young along with a few others went after Graham Harrells passing TD record of 67 in a season. Young finished with 64. He had 65 his junior year giving him the most touchdowns thrown over a 2 year period. Others like Bushland Quarterback Sawyer Cornelius and North Richland Hills Birdville Quarterback Josh Dorman also broke into the top 10 but could not pass up Harrell.
.
Galena Park North Shore's regular season winning streak was stopped at 78 in week 0 against the 2 time defending 5A champion Katy. Their 52 game district winning streak was also snapped later in the season by Port Arthur Memorial. North Shores last district loss and overall loss came November 10, 2000 against Baytown Lee. The two streaks were ended by a total of three points (9-7 to Katy and 7-6 to Port Arthur Memorial)
.
Abilene won their 7th state championship...the 1st state championship since 1956. The Eagles join Brownwood, Southlake Carroll and Plano as the only schools to win 7 state championships. Celina is at the top with 8 titles.
.
West Orange-Stark had their district winning streak snapped at 32 (2003-Present). It was the first time since dropping down to the 3A ranks in 2004 that they lost a district game.
.
Gilmer is now tied for 16th place all-time with 44 straight district wins.
.
The 2A Touchdown record fell as Caddo Mills Running Back Nate Jeffery scored 136 Career Touchdowns which ties him for #2 in all-time Career Touchdowns with Jacquizz Rodgers, Lamar Consolidated, 2004-07.
.
Aledo won their 2nd championship. The other was in 1998.
.
Euless Trinity won their 3rd championship in the last 5 years.

Carthage won their 2nd of back-to-back 3A championships.
.
Daingerfield won their 2nd of back-to-back 2A championships and their 5th overall
.
Bushland played in their 1st championship game but they have only been playing varsity ball for 3 years.
.
Speaking of new schools, Pearland Dawson, Cypress Woods, Lucas Lovejoy, San Antonio Brandies and Clear Springs all made it to the 4th round of the playoffs in only their 2nd year of playing varsity ball.
.
Cayuga won their 1st championship after losing in the championship game in 2008.
.
Gilmer won their 2nd championship. The other was in 2004.
.
Pilot Point won their 3rd championship. The other two were back to back in 1980 and 1981.
.
Goldthwaite won their 4th championship. They won in 1985 and then won back to back in 1993 and 1994. (They lost the championship game in 1992).
.
Flower Mound Quarterback Paul Millard broke the state record for Single-Game Pass Completions with 50 completions vs. Coppell in week #10. He broke the record of 48 by Jerry Lopez, Laredo Alexander vs. Laredo Martin, 2008 and Brian Parrish, Henrietta vs. Electra, 1995. He finished the season completing 328 (3rd all-time) passes on 509 attempts (4th all-time). He broke into the top all-time list in pass completions in a game 6 times during the season.
.
Richardson Pearce Quarterback Mac Morse threw for 634 yards in a game breaking the state record for passing yards in a game by 39 yards that was held by Laredo United Quarterback Alvaro Garcia who threw for a state-record 595 yards three years ago. He also threw the ball 68 times putting him into a tie for 5th place all-time for pass attempts in a game with Scotty Young, Denton Ryan vs. Frenship, 2008.
.
Richardson Pearce Wide Receiver Blake Jumonville was the primary receiver making 19 catches for 386 yards. The 19 catches tie him for 3rd all-time for receptions in a game. The 386 yards receiving breaks the all-time record that was held by Randy Boone, Chillicothe (1A) vs. Aspermont, 1984 with 357 yards.
.
Euless Trinity scored 88 points during their victory over Flower Mound in bi-district play. This broke the Class 5A playoff record (73) that was held by Lubbock Monterey.
.
Harleton Head Coach Dennis Alexander is now tied for 4th place in all time wins (312).
.
Class 2A schools voted 121-75 in favor of a split-conference alignment. This would separate 2A into Division I and Division II based on enrollment prior to the season, rather than after the regular season. The split-conference alignment places 16 districts in Division I and 16 districts in Division II prior to the regular season. Class 1A approved this last year. Classes 3A, 4A and 5A will remain the same.
.
The UIL also approved extending pre-determined sites for state football championship games to all classifications. Currently, only Class 5A has its Division I and Division II championship games played at a pre-determined site. Starting in the 2010 football season, the UIL will select the sites, dates and times for each championship football game in every classification.
.
Dallas Highland Park Head Coach Randy Allen won his 275th all-time game.
.
Corpus Christi Calallen Head Coach Phil Danaher won his 350th all-time game.
.
It was a battle between two of the top high school football teams in the state as the #1 team in 2A Daingerfield took on the #2 team in 3A Gilmer. The Gilmer Buckeyes continued their impressive season with a 43-20 win over the Tigers.
.
Galena Park North Shore showed that they were a championship contender with a convincing 29-14 victory over Southlake Carroll in a battle of Texas Titans.
.
Birdville Quarterback Josh Dorman and Denton Ryan Quarterback Scotty Young tied a record for most TD passes in a game with 8!!! They tied Baytown Lee’s Drew Tate (2001), Turkey Valley’s Kirk Saul (1986) and Barbers Hill’s Jabo Leonard (1971).
