San Marcos Academy Sells Naming Rights to Stadium

SAN MARCOS— San Marcos Academy has announced an agreement to partner with A+ Federal Credit Union as the official corporate sponsor of the Academy’s football, baseball and softball programs.

The Bears will open their 2010 football season under Head Coach Les Davis in the Ingram/A+ FCU Stadium, starting with their first home game September 3, 2010, versus the Brooks Academy Bengals of San Antonio. The Academy baseball and softball facilities will also carry the A+ name and logo.

Special Assistant for Athletic Development Ronald Oswalt, announced the partnership with A+ to staff and faculty. “SMA, one of the premier educational institutions in Central Texas, and A+ Federal Credit Union have joined forces in a naming rights corporate sponsorship that will benefit Academy students, faculty and staff,” Oswalt said. “This will be tasteful, it will be colorful, and it will be in keeping with the character and rich traditions of San Marcos Academy,”

A+ FCU CEO Kerry A.S. Parker, praised the school as an economic and educational engine for the area. “We look forward to partnering with SMA both athletically and academically,” Parker said. Keeping in tradition with how it was created over 60 years ago, A+ will also provide free financial education in SMA classrooms.

SMA officials are touting the A+ FCU partnership as an “anchor donation” that will inspire other corporations and individuals to get involved with the school’s new Bear Club. More than 25 corporate partners have joined the Bear Club so far. Information on sponsorship opportunities is available on the school website at www.smba.org.

Coaching Changes — New Braunfels Canyon

New Braunfels Canyon has hired Matt Elliott to be their new athletic director and head coach. Elliott replaces Les Davis who was reassigned after leading the Cougars for the past six years.

Davis had a 40-25 record at New Braunfels Canyon and has an all-time record of 52-41-1. He went 27-7 in his first three seasons at Canyon making it to the Class 4A Division II state quarterfinals in 2005. The last three years have not been as good though. His teams went just 13-18 and they only won four district games over the final two seasons.

Elliott arrives at Canyon after being the San Antonio Southwest head coach for the last four seasons. He went 38-9 during that time which is an average of 9.5 wins per season. He also took them to the playoffs all 4 seasons. Until Elliott took over, San Antonio Southwest did not have eight or more wins in a season since 1998. Since 1960, Southwest had just three seasons with eight or more wins and just seven playoff appearances. He also coached at Springtown (2003-2005) where he had a 19-13 record. This gives him a career record of 57-22.

New Braunfels Canyon will be part of a good District 27-4A that includes Buda Hays, Kyle Lehman, Lockhart, San Antonio Alamo Heights, Schertz Clemens and Smithson Valley. Their rival game is against New Braunfels in the “Wurst Bowl”. New Braunfels leads the all-time series 22-6.
