Team News: Heights won the District 7-4A championship last season and won its first playoff game in 30 years. They are currently on a 3 year winning streak and have had a winning season 8 of last 9 years.

Old Head Coach: Scott Callaway — Resigned to take an assistant coaching position at Mesquite. He was an assistant coach there from 1992 to 1999. Was Head Coach at Gladewater for four years (2006-2009) where he led them to a 16-26 overall record. He has a 67-40 all time coaching record.
New Head Coach: Jerrod Baugh — Was offensive coordinator at Longview since 2004. Worked as an assistant coach there from 2000-2003.
Team News: The Bear were 3-8 in 2009. The most wins in a season over the last 8 years is 7 (2002). They will be in what is probably the states toughest 3A district this upcoming year. District 16-3A will have Carthage the defending Class 3A Division II state champion. Gilmer the defending Class 3A Division I state champion and Pittsburg which made it to the semifinals last season. If that was not enough this district also has two schools who are dropping down from Class 4A in Longview Spring Hill and Henderson.

Semifinals:
Both of these games were close. At halftime Friendswood led Fort Bend Elkins 20-13 while Montgomery led Manvel 27-22. In the 2nd half it was Friendswood and Manvel who pulled away for victories and a trip to the state championships. There was a little bit of controversy in the Manvel/Montgomery game with just about 5 minutes left. Manvel was leading 36-35 and there was an injury in the Friendswood/Elkins game but it took maybe 5 seconds from the time the official was getting the coach with the horns attention and when he blew the horn. At that moment (it was close to the horn) Manvel was able to run a play and score a TD and took an 8 point lead.

Consolation Game:
Fort Bend Elkins held a 1 point 20-19 lead over Montgomery at half time but scored twice in the 2nd half while shutting out the Bears to win 35-19.
Championship:
Manvel scored minutes into the game with an INT returned for a TD and they just built on that. They led 26-6 at half over Friendswood and eventually went on to a 46-25 victory to win their SQT.

This pool will be a tough one. Lovejoy was the only team in this pool to make it to the state championship tournament last year. They went 2-1 last week in the Arlington Bowie SQT. The will feature one of the best QB’s in this tournament with QB Michael Means (1565 yards 30 TDs rushing 2092 yards 15 TDs passing) along with WR Hayden Marsh and TE Cade Carter. Dallas Smith went 0-3 last week in the Arlington Bowie SQT including a 33-12 loss to Lovejoy. They will be led by WR Desmond Patterson, TE/DE Chris Barnett (commmitted to Oklahoma) and DB LaDarrell McNeil. Boyd went 2-1 last week in the Arlington Bowie SQT lef by RB/LB Colton Lyon (700 yards 8 TDs rushing 94 tackles 6 sacks).

Roscoe has promoted Jonathan Haseloff from defensive coordinator to head coach after Wes Williams resigned. Williams is one of the state most successful coaches is leaving after leading the Plowboys for the last 12 seasons.
Williams finishes with a 116-29 overall record at Roscoe winning an even 80% of his games. He has led the Plowboys to 12 straight playoff appearances. He has never had a losing record while leading Roscoe and made the playoffs every year. His teams won eight district championships and has gone 59-5 in district play. 2009 was the worst record of his career (6-5). That ended a string of 10+ win seasons (3) and 9+ win seasons (9).
Roscoe will be a member of District 7-1A Division II for the next two seasons along with Crosbyton, Hamlin, Ralls, Roby and Rotan.
