Lone Star Gridiron 2011 Texas High School Football Players of the Year

Listen to the Lone Star Gridiron Statewide Show where we break down the players of the year.

Five Texas high school football players are being recognized as the 2011 Lone Star Gridiron Players of the Year.

Each year, Lone Star Gridiron looks at each of the classifications Class 1A through Class 5A and recognizes outstanding athletes for their achievements on the football field.

“We love the opportunity to highlight not only the players that put up great numbers, but the athletes that add something special to ‘the greatest sport from the greatest state’ – Texas high school football,” said Chris Doelle, co-founder and Managing Partner of Lone Star Gridiron.  “Each and every week we are introduced to great parents, coaches and supporters and watch as these athletes perform their hearts out – not for shoe contracts and fame, but for thousands of individual goals.  We are honored to highlight these amazing student athletes each and every year.”

“Mighty” Mike Wright, co-founder and COO of Lone Star Gridiron commented, “It was hard to pick just one player.  My original list was 10 or more players in each class.   Lots of  players deserve these awards.”

The Lone Star Gridiron 2011 Texas High School Football Players of the Year:

Class 5A – Trey Williams, RB, Spring Dekaney High School

Trey Williams lit up fields all across the Houston area during the regular season.  It was during the playoffs however, that the state took notice of this amazing talent.  Because the team had never even been to a playoff game in their school’s young history, Spring Dekaney was the underdog in almost every single playoff game.  Time and again, Williams took the ball and showed the doubters that he was ‘for real.’

The Wildcats’ Head Coach, Willie Amendola spared no praise talking about Williams, “Trey is THE best high school football player I’ve ever seen.  He has all the physical tools, but he also has the mental tools. He’s one of the toughest and the most competitive kids I’ve ever coached.”

Trey Williams carried the ball 427 times for 3,832 yards and 48 touchdowns for the season.  For his career, he finished with 915 carries for 8,044 yards, 87 touchdowns and 522 points.

Class 4A – Johnathan Gray, RB, Aledo High School

Johnathan Gray is likely the most written-about player in Texas high school football history.  His accolades have been piling up during the Aledo streak of three consecutive state championship titles.  Unlike some teams that have won consistently with a host of great talent, you cannot mention the Bearcats’ run without mentioning Gray.

His Head Coach, Tim Buchanan said, “He’s won three state champions so that tells you how good of a player he is, but Johnathan is also a good kid and a terrific leader.”

Gray ends his season with 347 carries for 3,886 yards and 65 touchdowns.  For his career he has 1,216 carries for 10,922 yards and 205 touchdowns (a national record for TDs) in addition to fifty-one 100 yard rushing games and a total of 1,272 points.

Class 3A – Joseph Sadler, RB, Devine High School

Joseph Sadler became a national sensation by turning in amazing numbers each and every week.

“I don’t know if there’s anybody that did more for his team than Joseph Sadler.  To rush for 3,800 and score 450 points is unbelievable.   He did what we asked him to do and he’s very humble about it.  He is the first to recognize his teammates each and every time.  We feel very fortunate that we had the opportunity to coach him here,” said Devine Warhorse Head Coach Chad Quisenberry.  He added, “We’re awfully glad he played for us!”

He finishes the season with 3,887 yards on 383 carries and 58 rushing touchdowns.  He was also the kicker and along with his touchdowns (61 total) he scored 451 points.  For his career, he ran for 7,038 on 769 carries for 102 total touchdowns.  He also finishes with 727 total points

Class 2A – Lynx Hawthorne, WR, Refugio High School

The Refugio Bobcats got attention by putting up basketball-like scores each and every week and a large percentage of those numbers came in the passing game.  Lynx Hawthorne not only had the potential to score each time he touched the ball, but he did so often.  Hawthorne’s speed and ability to adjust on the fly made him Sophomore Travis Quintanilla’s favorite target.  Add that to his humble, generous and grateful demeanor, and you have a perfect example of what makes Texas high school football so great.

Coach Jason Herring had the highest of praise for Hawthorne, “He has explosive speed, quickness and agility.  There might be nights when he got 300 yards and 4 touchdowns and you couldn’t tell  by the way he acted.  He was the ultimate team player and the first to credit everyone around him .  Way beyond his physical abilities, he is a gentleman, a great young man that anybody would be proud for their daughter to marry.”

Hawthorne finishes his Senior season with 72 receptions for 1,777 yards 25 touchdowns.

Class 1A – Reginald Davis, QB, Tenaha High School

Reginald Davis not only has amazing skills on the field, but has a story that is hard not to tell.  With every reason to blame the world for a series of life challenges, he has chosen to go another route.  Reginald will graduate near the top of this class and is never in trouble.  He is the kind of a young man that makes a team better just by walking on the field.  What he does on the field however, is something special too as he led the Tenaha Tigers to a state championship with

Reginald’s season statistics:  101-169 2,015 yards 24 touchdowns passing   1,915 yards 11.13 avg/carry 35 touchdowns rushing

Lone Star Gridiron has provided statewide coverage of Texas high school football for the last eight years.  Their motto, “Texas OWNED, Texas PROUD, ALWAYS FREE!” speaks to the fact that most the other statewide information sources either charge for their content and/or are owned by someone outside of Texas.  LSG’s ownership has been involved in Texas high school football for more than 33 years – they played it, they lived it, they love it.  (http://www.lonestargridiron.com)
