2012 LSG Team Preview — San Antonio Brooks Academy Bengals

2012 LSG Texas High School Football Team Preview — San Antonio Brooks Academy Bengals

Team: San Antonio Brooks Academy Bengals (15-2A Division I)

First Varsity Season: 2008

Enrollment: 312 -- 6th largest in the district out of 7 schools

Coach: Gabriel Luna (3 years) 1-29 record at San Antonio Brooks Academy (#1 in coaching wins at San Antonio Brooks Academy); 1-29 All-Time Coaching Record

Coaches Comments: Look for a strong incoming Junior class and Senior leadership to lead both on offense and defense. This should be the first year that we will not have Freshman on the varsity team. With last year being the first time that we had enough kids to field a JV team. Challenges will be moving up to big 2A with teams that have dropped down from 3A. District Outlook: George West, Jourdanton, Luling

Returning Lettermen: 12

Returning Starters: Offense: 7 Defense: 7

Key Players:
* QB JR Will Blohm -- has started at QB for the last 2 seasons and he is expected to led the offensive attack
* LB Derek Davila -- a 3 yr lettermen expected to lead the defense at MLB
* LB JR Craig Wells -- will move from LB to DE and anchor the strong side
* DB Nicolas Mauricio, 2nd team All-District at SS
* RB's Damian Melleion and Jacob Lopez expected to be the 1-2 punch in the backfield

Notes:
* 1-39 Since the school started playing
* 24 game district losing streak

  • Mike Says: The Bengals finally tasted victory for the first time last year after 3 0-10 seasons. Take away the game they won and they were outscored 36-394. Coach Luna has his hands full trying to get this program on track. Expect them to get another win this year and finish the season at 1-9.
  • Chris Says: Four years of frustration and a 1-39 record would seem pretty hopeless, but Bengals have some hope after Coach Luna led them to their first victory in school history last season.  The team brings back some solid veterans and has the foundation for an even better squad next season.  I am going to go out on a limb and say that they will win at least two games this year and maybe five after that.  If the school and community get behind the team while they have momentum, the growth of San Antonio Brooks Academy as a football program could be on its way.
