ZERO WEEK:
Zero week kicked off on Thursday night with several big matchups around the state. Cedar Hill rolled up over 600 yards of total offense to pound 4A’s #1 team Denton Guyer 54-28. Damion Hobbs (Ark State commit) threw for 227 and ran for 110 yards. A&M commits Quincy Adebejo and LaQuivionte Gonzales each scored three touchdowns, with Gonzales scoring on a run, catch, and return. Plano East’s Colin Shaw caught three touchdown passes in a five minute span in the second quarter to spark a come-from-behind 35-20 win over Garland. LaMarque won the Clash of the Causeway, beating Galveston Ball 35-12. Chavez transfer Demun Mercer accounted for 342 total yards and all five touchdowns for the Cougars. Justin Walker threw for 271 yards and 3 scores for Naaman Forest, but Rockwall-Heath prevailed 37-28. Troy McCormick rushed for 281 yards and 4 td’s to lead Mayde Creek to a 41-0 shutout of Cy Springs. Pasadena Memorial’s Reggie Turner rushed for 218 yards and a touchdown in a 33-7 beating of Ft. Bend Clements.

Euless Trinity got on a plane and flew to Washington, only to drop a heart-breaking 31-24 overtime loss to the nation’s #8 team, Bellevue. The Trojans had rallied from a 12 point deficit to force OT. Dallas Jesuit went even farther, flying to Dublin, Ireland to play Loyola Academy of Wilmette, IL as part of the football extravaganza accompanying the Notre Dame-Navy game. Jesuit edged Loyola 30-29 as QB Jack Brezette threw for 330 yards and Texas commit Jake Oliver hauled in 13 passes for 163 yards.
With Friday night lights on, everybody else got into the action.

DFW:
Allen opened their new 18,000 seat stadium before a SRO crowd of 21,776 and shut out defending state chanmpion Southlake Carroll 24-0. It was the first time Carroll had been shut out since 1997. Allen’s defense forced six punts, recovered two fumbles, and blocked a punt to set up a short touchdown just seconds before half. Desoto rolled over Arlington Martin 37-14 as junior QB Desmon White totaled 351 yards, evenly split between rushing (175) and passing (176). South Grand Prairie opened with an impressive 54-34 win over Arlington Lamar. LaQuinton Bailey rushed for 228 yards and 2 scores and Louis Dailey caught six passes for 190 yards and 2 more td’s. Aledo opened the post-Jonathan Gray era with a strong defensive effort in a 31-12 win over Highland Park. In a battle of two top rushers, Kennedale edged Crowley 42-38 as Kennedale’s Juwann Washington rushed for 224 yards and three td’s and Crowley’s Larry Cheeks top him with 254 yards on the ground and four scores. Ft. Worth Southwest’s dynamic combination of Wesley Harris and Robbie Rhodes were instrumental in a 42-36 win over Cleburne. QB Harris passed for 302 yards and five touchdowns, with WR Rhodes(Baylor commit) hauling in six passes for 169 yards and three of those scores.

Mesquite QB Alex Cooper completed 20/22 passes for 331 yards and four touchdowns as the Skeeters opened with a 27-9 win over Lake Highlands. Arlington Bowie Junior Keaton Perry rushed for 88 yards and threw for 344, accounting for 5 touchdowns in a 59-43 win over Mansfield. Wylie East Junior Garrett McClain threw for 365 and four touches in a 32-21 win over Red Oak. Another Junior, Max Partlow threw for six touchdowns and 335 yards as First Baptist rolled Wortham 52-0. Corsicana’s junior QB Devontay Bell rushed for 221 yards and two TDs in a losing cause as Denton Ryan turned back the Tigers 40-28. Sherman won a 57-56 shootout over Little Elm. BearCat QB Dru Smith threw for 403 yards and six scores, while Little Elm RB Keaun Kinner rushed for 413 yards and scored four times. Bishop Lynch sophomore Rawleigh Williams rushed for 155 yards and 2 TD’s in a 30-14 win over Denton.

On Saturday, Skyline’s duo of QB Devante Kincade(Ole Miss commit) and WR Ra’Shad Samples (OK State commit) connected on four touchdowns in a 42-28 comeback victory over The Woodlands. In his first action since breaking his fibula in a summer camp, Samples hauled in 11 passes for 169 yards. Coppell QB Colby Mahon (who transferred from Bridgeport, where he was a 3A all stater) completed 9/11 for 287 yards and four touchdowns as the Cowboys rolled over Longview 41-8.

Houston:
Klein Collins and Cy Woods combined for six second half touchdowns as Collins won 35-14. Spring Dekaney opened up defense of their 5A state title, with a 41-0 white-washing of Strake Jesuit. Texas A&M commit Kohl Stewart threw for 251 yards and three scores as St. Pius beat Kinkaid 38-14. Atascocita QB Grant Ashcraft completed 83% of his passes for 241 yards and a 31-6 win over Dobie. Shane McCarley threw for 368 and three TD’s as Manvel stepped up to Class 5A with a 35-21 win over Spring. Junior Aaron Sharpe threw for 330 yards and six touchdowns as Humble Summer Creek rolled over South Houston 69-28. Navasota QB Kadarius Baker accounted for 307 yards and four scores as the Rattlers shut out Willis 42-0. Junior E. J. Achelus of Morton Ranch turned in one of the top rushing performances in Greater Houston, running for 242 yards and three scores as Morton Ranch beat Tomball 48-14. Another top runner, Alief Taylor’s Trevorris Johnson rushed for 269 yards and three scores as Taylor beat Bellaire 29-9.

Central Texas:
After winning an unprecedented five straight 4A titles, Lake Travis moved up to Class 5A, playing their first game at that level against a perennial big school standout Converse Judson. No problem for the Cavaliers as Baker Mayfield connected with Zach Austin for a touchdown on the first play. Mayfield went on to throw five touchdowns passes and 413 yards in a 47-13 win over the Rockets. Westlake unveiled their new heralded junior QB Jordan Severt and he didn’t disappoint, throwing for 200 yards and 2 scores as the Chaps knocked off 4A power Cedar Park 21-7. Leander crunched Connally 35-7 as Texas Tech commit Caleb Woodard rushed for 152 yard and three scores and threw a TD pass for the Lions. Syracuse commit Zach Allen ran for three touchdowns and passed for two and the Wildcats ‘s defense recorded eight sacks in a 41-24 win over Round Rock.

In San Antonio, Lawrence Mattison ran for a 78 yard touchdown on the first play of the game and Smithson Valley beat Brandeis 41-7. Boerne Champion’s Kyle Poeske came out firing, completing 39 of 60 passes for 571 yards and six touchdowns in a 44-34 win over New Braunfels. Churchill won the Gucci Bowl over Clark as Dimitri Flowers scored three touchdowns. Cibolo Steele beat Madison with Justin Stockton rushing for 262 yards and four scores. Frank Barnes returned a punt 83 yards for a score and caught a touchdown pass as Roosevelt beat Stevens 37-10. Down South , defending 2A champ Refugio beat Ingleside 62-27 with Travis Quintanilla throwing for 457 yards and 5 touchdowns. Ev en better was Laredo South’s Alec Salas who tossed 5 touchdowns as part of a 515 yard night, but in a losing cause, 56-33 to San Antonio Southwest . Pleasanton’s Luke Walters tossed three touchdown passes as part of a 320 yard night in a 45-34 win over Edicson.

West Texas:
Dee Paul, Munday’s do everything QB, scored seven touchdowns in five different ways to lead the Moguls past Windthorst 69-17. Paul scored twice on runs, passed for one, returned two interceptions for TD’s, had on fumble recovery return and 1 kickoff return for scores. West Texas other Class 1A star Hagen Hutchinson of Stamford, showed no effects of off season shoulder surgery, throwing for five touchdowns and 239 yards in a 34-0 shutout of McCAmey. Junior Jared Black rushed for 313 yard and 7 touchdowns to lead Shallowater past Muleshoe in a 56-40 shootout. Dumas QB Rylan Gerber threw for 413 yards and five scores in a 49-29 win over Perryton. 55-41 win over Lakeview. Shane Dolgener threw for 417 and 4 tds to lead Andrews to a Out in El Paso, Aaron Jones rushed for 315 yards on just 12 carries, and scored 5 touchdowns as Burges beat Clint 39-13.

Big Spring Sophomore Tobyn Tannehill completed 11/16 passes for 231 yards and four td’s as Big Spring shutout Ft. Stockton 49-0. Another sophomore opening with a big night was Somerset’s Koy Detmer, JR who threw for 363 yards and three TD’s in a 42-21 win over San Antonio Lanier.
