Five Big Things in Texas High School Football

Week Zero

I'm not saying these are the five biggest stories in Texas high school football this weekend, but you can certainly make a strong argument for them.  These are five things that stood out to me

1.  Allen Defeats Southlake Carroll - None is bigger.  This one had the nationwide attention because it was the first game in the Allen Eagles' $60 million stadium.  It also last seasons' undefeated Class 5A Division I Champion and perennial powerhouse Southlake Carroll Dragons.  This one had it all.  Not only did the Allen Eagles get the win in front of more than 20,00 fans, but they managed something no team has done in 15 years... shutout the Dragons in their 24-0 victory.   There are a lot of questions now too.

Is Allen this good or are they riding the high of all the interest created by the stadium?  Is something wrong with QB Kenny Hill and his Southlake Carroll Dragons, or was this just too much hype for any team to play past?

2. Klein Oak 63, Langham Creek 56 OT - Fans in attendance here not only saw a game that is sure to make our list of Top Games for 2012, but was an absolute treat for fans of great games.   The lead went back and forth all night and if you were a fan of offense, then this one had it all.   The two teams combined for 1,022 yards of offense and 17 touchdowns!

With all that scoring, a star or two was sure to stand out and none shone brighter than Klein Oak junior quarterback Jordan Davis.  Davis notched 296 yards through the air and five touchdowns, including the 20 yard strike in overtime to give them the victory.  Langham Creek's quarterback,  Connor Feist also managed 267 yards through the air with one touchdown, but his feet were the story for Langham Creek as he scored five times running the ball.

It is a shame that someone had to lose a game like this as it will be long remembered by everyone in attendance.

3.  Melissa wins over Celina - Allen's Eagle Stadium is a breeding ground for good games!  Celina and Melissa played the Saturday matchup at the new stadium and what a treat it was!  The Melissa Cardinals started off on fire against the Celina Bobcats, rolling up a 10-0 lead by halftime.  The second half was a different story as Celina stormed back and took the lead 13-12 with just seconds remaining in the third quarter.    The teams battled it out in a tough game that was ultimately decided when Melissa scored with just 7 seconds remaining.   Cardinals 18, Bobcats 13.

4.  Texas High School Football in Ireland - Dallas Jesuit kicker, Cody Wicker hit a game-winning field goal in Donnybrook Stadium Friday night to defeat Wilmette Loyola Academy 30-29.  Nothing too exciting about that right?  Well, when you consider the game was played in Dublin, Ireland - it is a BIG DEAL!  That's right, Texas high school football travels "across the pond" to Ireland.  As we become an increasingly global community and Texans are relocated all over, there have long been more and more fans of Texas high school football across the globe.  Now however, rather than exporting the fans, we have exported the game itself.  We have long been known as the world leaders in "doing it big," and this is no exception.  Look for this trend to continue.

5.  The Brotherhood Explodes!! - We launched the Brotherhood of Texas High School football this summer to honor those who played "the greatest sport in the greatest state."  Everyone that heard about it has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive - after all, we are honoring those millions of people who share in this tremendous fraternity.  This first week of football action since the launch was absolutely phenomenal!  We went from getting a couple people a day signing up to hundreds across the state.  Thank you to everyone who is joining and please, keep sharing the message.  Look for these names to be compiled and honored in various ways throughout the coming years.  For now, you have been seeing us honor them via social media sites like facebook and twitter, but we have much bigger plans INCLUDING some scholarships for current Texas high school football players.  What a great way to kick off the season
