WEEK ONE:

Central Texas:
Temple overcame a 35 point Westlake lead and knocked off the Chaps 49-42. Keith Buhl’s 21 yard touchdown run with just 49 seconds remaining was the game winner, as Syracuse commit Zach Allen led the Wildcat comeback , throwing for 22/33 and 282 yards. Lake Travis jumped to 2-0 with a a 49-7 win over New Braunfels Canyon. Junior RB Shaun Nixon rushed for 182 yards to lead the Cavaliers. St. Andrews rolled over Austin Reagan 62-14 with junior RB Brandon Hawkins rushing for 150 yards and four scores. Caleb Kimbro accounted for five touchdowns as Hays beat Anderson 35-7. In the Alamo City, Steele took advantage of five turnovers and the Knights rallied to beat Judson 35-0. San Antonio Highlands ended a 32 game losing streak with a resounding 65-19 win over Uvalde. Harlandale smashed Lanier 58-16 with Junior Brandon Ramon throwing for 294 yards and four touchdowns, and rushing for a fifth. Wagner shut out Clemens 32-0 as Robert Gardner rushed for 191 yards. 2A power Refugio shut out Edna 56-0 as junior QB Travis Quintanilla passed for 343 yards and six touchdowns. Hallettsville QB Nate Kowalik passed for 385 yards and six touchdowns also in a 49-28 win over Shiner. Kowalik also rushed for 51 yards.

DFW:
Stephenville knocked off Aledo for the second year in a row 41-28. Jackets QB Tyler Jones threw for 293 yards and three scores, rushed for 137 and another, while Soph WR Jarrett Stidham caught 11 passes for 172 yards and two scores. Denton Guyer, the pre-season #1 team in Class 4A suffered their second straight loss 54-38 to Colleyville Heritage. Heritage scored the final 26 points as Oklahoma commit Cody Thomas threw for 363 yards and ran for 71. Junior QB Jerrod Heard rushed for four touchdowns for Guyer. Frisco Centennial scored 21 points in a 2 ½ minute span to cruise past Lake Dallas 42-14. Terryion Gipson rushed for 233 yards and scored three times as Dallas Kimball rolled over Madison 42-12. Corey Avery rushed for 163 yards and four touchdowns as Carter beat Terrell 33-19.

Two big contests highlighted a growing Texas/Oklahoma high school rivalry as Euless Trinity and Desoto took on Sooner powers Jenks and Tulsa Union. Trinity edged Union 21-18 before over 11,000 fans at Pennington field, while Desoto beat Jenks 46-27 as junior safety Nick Orr blocked two punts and also intercepted a pass. Two other games matched top local teams. Skyline won a 37-34 shootout over Arlington Martin. Texas commit Kyle Hicks rushed for 203 yards on 33 attempts and totaled five touchdowns for Martin, while Ole Miss commit Devante Kincade passed for 222 yards and two scores, and had a 68 yard touchdown run for the Raiders. Allen’s defense stretched their unscored upon streak to 71 minutes before giving up a touchdown to Cedar Hill as the Eagles downed the Longhorns 37-20.

Yedidiah Louis totaled 341 yards and accounted for five first half touchdowns in a 48-19 Berkner win over North Garland. Justin Northwest forced seven Grapevine turnovers and scored the final 28 points to beat Grapevine 28-7. Cleburne smashed Weatherford 52-3 with RB Kibo Grant rushing for 271 yards and six touchdowns. Southlake Carroll rolled Midland 63-3 as A&M commit Kenny Hill passed for an even 300 yards and 2 tds. Ladell Marshall rushed for 201 yards and two scores, passed for one score, and caught a touchdown pass in a 44-37 FW Wyatt shootout win over Dunbar. Speaking of shootouts, Plano East beat Naaman Forest 60-38. East QB Mario Smalls passed for 255 yards and three touchdowns and added two more on the ground, while NF QB Justin Walker threw for 317 and four touchdowns. Midlothian edged Keller Timber Creek 42-34 despite a 394 yard performance by TC QB Cedric Dale. Denton QB Cy Ward threw for 345 yards and five scores in a 35-6 win over RL Turner.

In Private school action, TCA’s Daniel Davidson threw for 383 yards and 5 touchdowns in a 56-21 win over Brownsboro, while Jesuit QB Jack Brezetter passed for 343 and 5 touchdowns in a 34-21 win over Fossil Ridge. Parish Episcopal RB Zach Shelley rushed for 205 yards and 5 touchdowns on just nine carries in a 62-18 rout of Hillcrest.

Houston:
Greater Houston kicked off Thursday night with a nationally televised ESPNU game between Sealy and St. Pius. With A&M coach Kevin Sumlin flying in on a helicopter to see two prize recruits, one of the Aggie’s committed QB’s Kohl Stewart threw three touchdown passes to key a 45-21 victory. Sealy’s super QB, Ricky Seals-Jones, arguably the top “uncommitted” player in the state rushed for 213 yards and three scores, but left the game late in the third quarter with what apparently was a dislocated knee cap. In other Thursday games, EJ Achelus continued his torrid early season pace, rushing for 270 yards and two touchdowns as Morton Ranch beat FB Austin 48-28. Aldine QB Derrick Brown rushed for 251 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in a 42-34 win over Oak Ridge.

On Friday night, North Shore beat Manvel 56-28, scoring the last 49 points and rushing for over 300 yards in the second half. Triston Houston keyed the win with 210 yards and two scores. Pearland Dawson beat Montgomery 28-17 as junior WR Tony Upchurch had five catches for 60 yards and four rushes for 52 yards. LaMarque beat arch-rival Texas City 34-21 as Denum Mercer nd Ladarrian Ellis-Jones combined for 201 yards and four scores. Rosenberg Terry knocked off Dulles 47-35 despite a 472 yard/4 td performance by Dulles QB Robert Harris. Another outstanding performance in a losing cause was by Dickinson RB Kryston Harmon, who rushed for 255 and 3 scores as the Gators dropped a 49-28 contest to Friendswood. Still another excellent game was turned in by South Houston’s James Davis, who totaled 395 yards and three scores ,but dropped a 55-21 contest to LaPorte. College Park beat Huntsville 35-12 as RB Connor McPherson rushed for 217 yards and two scores on just nine carries. Clear Creek beat Kingwood 34-14 with QB Jarrett Hildreth throwing for 373 yards and four touchdowns. Angleton WR Jalyn Judkins caught four passes but three went for scores as he totaled 192 yards in receptions in a 69-28 win over Brazoswood.

West Texas:
In a early showdown between two 1A schools, that both reached the state championship game last year, Munday edged Stamford 34-27. In a losing cause, Stamford QB Hagen Hutchinson passed for 219 yards , rushed for 82 and accounted for all the touchdowns. Stamford’s defense held Mogul QB Dee Paul (SMU commit) to just 119 total yards, but Paul did have a kickoff return for touchdown that was the difference maker. Another top West Texas QB had a big night in a losing cause. Seminole senior Jacob Burtch was 20/49 for 289 yards, but the Indians dropped a 27-10 contest to Idalou. Idalou RB Koal Houchens rushed for 246 yards and three scores. Abilene’s passing combination of QB Evin Abbe and WR kevan Lucas was too much for Duncanville. The Eagles win 26-8 as Abbe passed for 219 yards and Lucas caught six balls for 117 yards. Abilene Cooper edged Cedar Park 17-14 as Kerry Sims rushed for 117 yards and two TD’s. Canyon Randall shut out Hereford 33-0 with Colin Bowen rushing for 160 yards and 3 td’s.

East Texas:
John Tyler didn’t last long atop the Class 4A rankings, dropping a 26-21 decision to Lancaster. Lancaster QB Demarcus Ayers threw for 204 yards and accounted for five touchdowns. Corsicana rallied from 26 down but lost a close one at Red Oak 34-31. Jeremiah Gaines rushed for 132 yards and scored 3 td’s for Red oak. Carthage scored the first 17 points and cruised past Lindale 30-21. Kilgore had four backs rush for a combined 158 yards in the second half in a 24-7 win over Sweeny. Longview’s Lobos traveled all the way to North Little Rock and came home with a 30-14 win. Texas High dropped a 54-7 contest to Shreveport Evange. Texas Tech commit Dylan Cantrell caught 9 passes for 172 yards and two scores to lead Whitehouse past Chapel Hill 38-14. Over 10,000 fans packed Mother Trinity Francis stadium for the 26th renewal of the Lake Tyler rivalry. Lufkin dedicated John Outlaw Field with a 41-31 win over Tyler Lee. Lee RB LaQuintas Wallace rushed for 164 yards and three touchdowns in a losing cause for Lee. Speedy Michael Roberson rushed for 84 yards and caught passes for 86 to key a 40-6 Arp route over Paul Pewitt. One week after gaining their 600th victory as a program, Gilmer dropped a 42-12 contest to Prestonwood Christian. Soph QB Mickey Mitchell paced Prestonwood with four touchdowns.
