Stamford Returns And Wins 4th All-Time Championship

The Stamford Bulldogs won their 4th all-time state championship and first since 1958 during their 35-28 victory over the Mart Panthers in the Class 1A Division I Championship game. Mart was playing in their 9th all-time championship game and now have a 4-4-1 record in the big game.

Stamford quarterback Hagen Hutchinson was the big story in the game. He scored the game winning touchdown with 32 seconds left in the game and then intercepted a last chance pass near the end zone to give the Bulldogs the win. Hutchinson finished the night with 132 yards rushing and 248 yards passing and 4 total touchdowns. He also played an outstanding game at defensive back. The Bulldogs were the state runner ups last season when they fell to Mason 62-40. In that game, Hutchinson passed for 351 yards and had 4 touchdowns while playing with a dislocated shoulder. Mart was defeated by Stamford last season in the semifinals.

Mart led this one at the half 21-13 behind a big game by SOPH QB De'Nerian Thomas. Thomas finished the night with 224 yards passing and 89 yards rushing and 3 total touchdowns. Stamford scored midway through the 3rd quarter and with the 2 point conversion tied the game at 21. Right before the 4th quarter, Thomas scored his last touchdown and Mart led it 28-21 going into the final quarter. One minute into the 4th quarter, Stamford tied it up. Stamfords final touchdown came when they took over at the Mart 49 yard line with 3:08 left in the game.

Hutchinson ends his season with 216 completions on 320 attempts for 2,854 yards and 43 touchdowns passing. He ends his career with 504 completions on 773 attempts for 8.330 yards and 98 touchdowns. The Bulldogs actually won another state championship in 1959 when they defeated Brady 19-14. They were later stripped of the championship.
