Lydell Wilson set to build something at Katy Seven Lakes

Katy Seven LakesKaty Seven Lakes Head Football Coach, Lydell Wilson's resume is a bit misleading.  His is not a record of astonishing win total, but if building teams.   At Lamar Consolidated he established a 50-40 overall record and numerous playoff appearances.  He helped guide the Mustangs to the State Championship in 2007.  In the two years prior to Wilson's arrival, the Mustangs only had three wins.  In two years at C.E. King, he helped guide the Panthers to a record of 8-12.  Although those numbers aren’t very impressive, he did help the Panthers program grow from 46 players to roughly 130.  Wilson also coached future NFL players James and Jacquizz Rodgers.

Coach Wilson now has the task of helping build the Seven Lakes Spartan program. In this,  his second season at Seven Lakes, Wilson has raised the expectations considerably.

“I expect us to improve every week and win. Our goal is to win the State Championship whether it’s this year or next year and you wouldn’t prepare any other way.”

If the Spartans achieve their goals of winning, it will be something they are not used to. They went 18-42 under former coach Kevin O’Keefe, with only one winning season and playoff appearance. It often is difficult to get players to buy into your system after not much success. Wilson though, has a plan to negate that.

“You just have to make yourself visible and go out and talk to them. Let the players know what the expectations are as well as the fans so they have something to look to. Being in a district with Katy, Cinco Ranch, and all the other good teams you’re going to have to be at a different level with everybody.”

Wilson has experience coaching great players and developing them. He has sent several players to play Division 1 football, most notably Jacquizz Rodgers. Rodgers was good leader and always made sure to give it his all. He played hard in games, practice, and in weightlifting. That attitude and effort spreads easily. This year the Spartans have some good players that already have signed or received offers from D1 schools. Two of those players, Jarret Johnson and Bright Ugwoegbu, Wilson sees as being strong leaders.

“You have some of those guys that are pretty good athletes that have been playing varsity football for three years.  Jarrett has been a three year starter and Bright a two year starter.  Those guys are going to lead by example.  They are going to show that to the young kids, and our young kids will take it to the next level.”

With these high expectations and strong leaders, Wilson and the Spartans feel confident they'll be able to reach their goals.  The only thing in their way are football programs like Cinco Ranch and Katy.

“You just got to go out and play.  Just like every other team we got to go out and be the best team we can be and be prepared to give everybody our best shot.  We believe in ourselves and we believe we will give them our best shot.”
