Texas high school football newsAustin Westlake at Austin Bowie:  Bowie 21-16

Austin Bowie raced to a 21-7 halftime lead and held off a late Austin Westlake rally to claim a vital District 15-5A victory, 21-16. The victory for Bowie (5-0) sets up a showdown with Lake Travis in Week 5. Austin Eschenburg threw for two touchdowns and added a 13-yard touchdown run in the first half to give Bowie an early 21-0 lead. Eschenburg finished with 293 total yards in the victory. Westlake (2-3) got two touchdowns on the ground from Alex Chavez. SMU commit Jordan Severt threw for 167 yards to pace Westlake.

Bastrop at Georgetown East View: East View 44-38

Despite rushing for 549 yards on the night, Bastrop could not hold on in a 44-38 loss to Georgetown East View. East View scored the game-winning touchdown when Cornelio Garcia hit paydirt with 1:24 remaining on a 42-yard run after a furious Bastrop comeback made it interesting. Garcia finished with 255 yards and four touchdowns in the victor while Chandler Crawford scored on an 80-yard run for East View. As for Bastrop, Carrington Waites rushed for 195 yards on 20 carries to lead the way while Cameron Brown (132 yards) and Izaiyah Washington (122 yards) paced Bastrop.

San Antonio Madison at San Antonio Churchill: Madison 28-26

San Antonio Madison picked up an important District 26-5A victory and got back in the win column after a surprising blowout loss to Smithson Valley with a narrow 28-26 victory over San Antonio Churchill.  After Boise State commit Dimitri Flowers scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge for Churchill with :11 remaining, Madison turned away the ensuing two-point conversion that would have sent the game to overtime. Madison quarterback Cody Ennis is known for his passing ability, but picked up 149 yards and three touchdowns rushing for the Mavericks (4-1), including a 69-yard run. Flowers finished with 75 yards rushing and three touchdowns to go along with 124 receiving yards and a score for the Chargers (3-2).

Ingram Moore at Early: Early 31-29

Early erased a 29-19 deficit in the last four minutes to claim a 31-29 victory over Ingram Moore to claim a crucial District 3-2A Division I victory. Riley Mitchell scored the game-winner on a 9-yard run with 1:09 to claim the victory for Early (3-2). Jake Fisher, who scored on a 4-yard touchdown to bring the score to within 29-25 with 3:24 remaining, rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way. Ingram Moore (4-1) got an outstanding rushing performance from Keaun Valverde, who rushed for 235 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries.

Fairfield at Navasota: Fairfield 44-24

Perhaps pundits should have paid attention to Fairfield’s unbeaten mark heading into a contest with defending 3A-Division II state champion Navasota. Fairfield snapped Navasota’s 20-game winning streak with a comfortable 44-24 victory. Larry Rose rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns to lead Fairfield (5-0), while Jacob Gallegos contributed with 163 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Navasota (4-1) could only muster 188 yards of total offense in the loss.

San Antonio Brennan moved to 5-0 on the season by posting its fourth shutout of the season, a 62-0 victory over San Antonio Edison. Brennan allows 88 yards per game this season and gives up less than five points per game… Oklahoma State commit Ramon Richards threw for 435 yards and four touchdowns as San Antonio Brackenridge beat San Antonio Jefferson, 55-14. Richards added two rushing scores in the victory… Smithson Valley moved to 5-0 on the season with a 61-18 victory over Corpus Christi King. Louisiana-Monroe commit Garrett Smith was 15 of 16 passing for 218 yards and five touchdowns in the victory… After finishing 0-10 in 2012, Schertz Clemens moved to 4-0 on the season with a 27-0 victory away to Kerrville TivySomerset junior quarterback Koy Detmer Jr. took a back seat to Donaldo Perez in a 35-30 victory over Kingsville King. Perez rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.

Kyle Lehmann wide receiver John Herrera caught eight passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns in a 56-35 loss to Buda HaysPflugerville Connally exploded on offense to beat Cedar Creek 91-15. Laquinn Sorrells rushed for 277 yards and six touchdowns in the victory… Jordan Johnson booted a 30-yard field goal to give Lockhart a 24-21 victory over Sequin… Two weeks after upsetting Refugio, Lago Vista fell to Troy, 21-7.  Troy quarterback Kyle Whitley was the hero for Troy, rushing for 131 yards and two scores in the victory… Houston commit Bear Fenimore accounted for four total touchdowns as Round Rock Westwood downed Round Rock, 31-28.

Waco Reicher Catholic evened its 2013 record at 2-2 with a 55-42 victory over Arlington Pantego Christian. Reicher quarterback Payne Sullins was sensational, threw for 408 yards and three touchdowns in a winning effort… Detrayton Wagoner rushed for 107 rushing yards and a touchdown as La Vega downed Gatesville, 37-26… Stephenville junior quarterback Jarrett Stidham is now in full breakout mode as he threw for 344 yards and four touchdowns in a 64-42 victory over Amarillo. Stidham added 132 yards and a score on the ground for the Yellow Jackets… Temple returned to the win column with a 37-27 victory over Killeen Shoemaker. Jeff Carr rushed for 124 yards to lead Temple, who are without junior quarterback Chad President (Baylor commit) due to injury.
