Dallas/Fort Worth Roundup – Week One

Dallas 1

Plano vs. Irving MacArthur: Plano 28-0
Plano’s defense shined again this week with their 2nd shutout in a row. They only allowed MacArthur QB Logan Austin to complete 27.5% of his passes with 0 TD passes and 1 INT. They also held MacArthur to 33 Yds passing on 11 attempts. On the offensive side RB Brandon Stephens ran for 134 Yds. and 1 TD on 20 carries. What’s more astounding is that they had 6 different players run for positive yardage while only have two receivers catching the 5 completed passes QB Mitchell Hansen threw. This Plano team has returned to its roots with a tough ground game and a shutdown defense which may surprise some teams when they reach district play.

Lake Dallas vs. Frisco Centennial: Lake Dallas 51-44
Another shootout for Lake Dallas this week against the Titans made for a classic double overtime thriller. Dagan Haehn had another thrilling game going 27-41 with 334 Yds. and 5 TDs, one of which that was caught by Brandon Simpson and ended up being the winning catch in overtime. He also threw 2 INTs one of which was returned for a touchdown by Brandon Anderson. On the other side, QB Kelly Cordova for the Titans had an equally impressive game going 17-32 with 290 Yds. throwing 5TDs and 1 INT. Cordova also ran for 107 Yds. in this game which made him a dual-threat to this Lake Dallas defense. They were able to hold on long enough for Haehn and the Lake Dallas offense to seal the win in double overtime.

Tyler John Tyler vs. Lancaster: Tyler John Tyler 31-28
This game literally went back and forth as each team dominated 2 separate quarters. Lancaster came out strong scoring on the 1st possession and had the ball in the red zone for the majority of the quarter. However after losing a fumble late in the quarter John Tyler took over kicking 3 field goals and scoring a touchdown in the 2nd quarter and opened the second half by a 32-yard TD run by Reggie Gipson, his second. Lancaster would respond scoring 21 straight points and had the momentum going into the 4th quarter. Just like in the 2nd quarter Lancaster could not find the end zone making the way for John Tyler’s K Jose Perez to win the game on a 17-yard field goal with 1 second left.

Woodrow Wilson vs. Fort Worth Eastern Hills: Woodrow Wilson 37-36
Another exciting game this week featured Woodrow Wilson and Ft Worth Eastern Hills. Woodrow Wilson looked to have this game under control going into the half however Eastern Hills got back into the game thanks to QB Antwjuan Strahan. This Eastern Hills defense however had a difficult time controlling RB Tracey James who ran for 208 Yds. and 2 TDs on 31 carries, and also Da’Montae Bright who had 104 Yds. and 1 TD on 14 carries. What killed Eastern Hills were the extra point attempts, they were 0/1 on XPs and 0/5 on 2 point conversions. If just one conversion is completed then this is probably a different game entirely.

Desoto vs. Tulsa Union (Okla.): Desoto 44-20
Closer than the score indicates this first game of the TX vs. OU games was a great one featuring two great QBs Desoto’s Desmond White and Tulsa Union’s Mason Farquhar. Farquhar surprised this Desoto defense throwing for 300 Yds. on 22-36 passing and 3 TDs. But in Texas you also have to be able to run the ball, something Union struggled with (37 Yds. on 29 carries). Another thing they struggled with? QB Desmond White. White completed 19-28 for 230 yards and a TD, he also ran for 99 Yds. and 1 TD on 17 carries. The Desoto running game was unstoppable with 5 different players scoring from the ground game.

Euless Trinity vs. Tulsa Jenks (Okla.): Tulsa Jenks 27-23
The second installment of the TX vs. OU series featured two very even teams who couldn’t gain the upper hand on the other. Jenks played very well defensively getting the ball in good field position for the offense. QB Cooper Nunley threw 3 TDs on only 181 Yds. passing, most of those yards went to WR Austin Casillas who had 5 catches for 95 yds. Jenks stood up to the test against a tough Trinity team who had a solid running game with Isaac Ellsworth and Ja’Ron Wilson who had 138 & 107 respectively. Trinity had chances at the end of the game to comeback when S Dany Mulanga had 2 INTs on back-to-back possessions for Jenks, but Jenks’ defense held strong keeping Trinity out of the red zone on those two possessions.
