Houston Roundup – Week Zero

Houston Texas high school football week zero

Katy is back at it: Don’t expect any kind of championship hangover from the Katy Tigers. The reigning 5A Division II champs shook off some first-half jitters and blitzed the Klein Bearkats 41-3 at Reliant Stadium. Star tailback Rodney Anderson led the way with 209 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries. The Tigers are now 8-0 at Reliant.

Memorial tops Stratford in rivalry game: It’s not very often that you start off your season with a win over your rival. That’s what Memorial did on Friday, beating Stratford 23-13. The Mustangs relied on a strong rushing attack to put away the Spartans, amassing 299 yards on the ground. Neither of these teams is expected to make a lot of noise, but rivalries like this always make good theater.

North Shore is dangerous: Katy wasn’t the only powerhouse that flexed its muscle this weekend. North Shore handled a playoff-caliber Clear Springs squad by a score of 52-14. From start to finish, the Mustangs controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of ball. Their total team speed is obvious, and it will be tough for any opponent to contain. Could this finally be their year?

The Woodlands falls short of upset: It took overtime to decide Saturday’s thriller between The Woodlands and Dallas Skyline. After being forced to kick a field goal in the extra period, the Highlands were unable to prevent Raider running back Maleon Ward from punching in the game-winning touchdown. In spite of the loss, look for the Highlanders to outperform their preseason expectations.

Tough weekend for Sam Rayburn: The 28-6 loss to New Caney Porter is probably the last thing on the Sam Rayburn program’s minds. Just nine days earlier, the Texans’ starting starting tailback LaTrone Williams died in an auto accident. We wish the best to the program and Williams’ family, especially his younger brother Josh, as they deal with this tragedy.
