Humble Summer Creek Downs Crosby in Shootout, 63-49

Texas high school football

Austin Walter of Crosby running against Humble Summer Creek

HUMBLE – It a battle between two offensive juggernauts in District 19-4A, Aaron Sharp and Humble Summer Creek outlasted Crosby and the Walter twins 63-49 to remain a perfect 4-0 on the season and extend its regular season winning streak to 18 games.

Sharp, the southpaw who is committed to Kansas State, was as good as advertised going 18 of 30 for 281 yards and five touchdowns. Sharp has yet to throw an interception this season and now has 78 career touchdown passes.

Summer Creek junior running back De’Unte Chatman had a breakout performance, which was essential in the victory. Chatman rushed for 212 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries. Chatman scored on a 66-yard run in the first quarter and later put the game to bed by rumbling 68 yards to make it 63-49 with 3:35 left in the game.

How good is Crosby’s offense?
Humble Summer Creek gave up 10 points a game coming into the contest. The up-tempo Cougars are special at the skilled positions.  Aston Walter operates the controls at quarterback for Crosby and finished with 281 yards passing for three scores and added 142 rushing yards and a touchdown. Twin brother Austin, who will join Aston at Rice next season, rushed for 159 yards and a pair of scores.

After Chatman scored on a 3-yard pass from Sharp to give Summer Creek a 42-28 lead with 8:19 left in the third quarter, Austin Walter quickly answered by taking a pass 87 yards for a touchdown.  Austin Walter finished with 103 receiving yards for Crosby, while Utah commit Raelon Singleton and Cullen Lee combined for seven catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

“That was a classic game right there. Two great offenses. We knew they were going to make plays. They are great players, they are well-coached, and they always play hard. We knew we were going to face some adversity on defense,” said Summer Creek coach Brian Ford.

Texas Tech commit Dakota Allen, who was everywhere while leading the Bobcats defense, knew Summer Creek’s hands would be full with the Walter twins looming, “We wanted to be the ones to stop them because we knew how good those other two (the Walter twins) are over there. We just believed in the coaches schemes and did enough to come away with a victory,” said Allen.

A.J. Jeffery caught eight passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, while Torrey Johnson added 100 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns on four grabs to pace Summer Creek.

Both teams combined for 1,105 yards and did not commit a turnover.

Crosby falls to 4-1 on the season and faces New Caney at home on Oct. 4. Summer Creek will hit the road in Week 5 to take on Houston King.
