Texas high school footballMike Says: This is a match-up of two of the winningest teams in the state. Smithson Valley is guaranteed to have their 18th consecutive winning seasons going 195-37 during that stretch. It is also a good likelihood that they will have 9+ wins for the 16th time out of the last 17 seasons. Converse Judson needs 1 more win to lock up their 37th consecutive winning season which would break their tie with Plano for the all-time state record. This game is most likely for the district 25-5A championship. We have Judson ranked just ahead of Valley but the Rangers are at home and have the winning streak in the series. Both schools have been impressive this year but 2 teams enter and 1 team leaves a winner. The RANGERS win it 28-17!!

Texas high school footballChris Says:  Smithson Valley certainly appears to be the better team right now despite their ranking.  They have played against stronger opponents on the average.  Judson stumbled against Steele, but has looked solid in every other game.  The problem is none of them were contenders.  Larry Smith with have his team ready for the biggest challenge in District 25-5A.  RANGERS win 45-28!!

Texas high school footballLSG Intern Zach Says: Winner wins district. And if that isn’t enough for you, these are two of the best teams in the whole state. The Rockets have been perfect since falling to Cibolo Steele, cruising to four wins by an average of 32 points. They do it with balance. Everybody on this team does their job really well, but I particularly like the speed of WR Andre Wilson and RB Brandon Sanders. Both are dangerous in space, and that will pay dividends come playoff time. You could say the same thing for Smithson Valley, though Garrett Smith and Cameron Jones are clearly the guys here. Smith has not flashed like Allen’s Kyler Murray or DeSoto’s Desmon White, but he is effective throwing and carrying the ball. He needs to have a big game, which ends up being the difference. Rangers 35-34.

Texas high school footballLSG Intern William Says: Both teams have been battle tested and have flexed their muscles against weaker opponents. The lone blemish for Judson is their loss to Cibolo Steele, which a lot of teams seem to lose to, while Smithson Valley remains unbeaten. Both teams have poised quarterbacks in the pockets Smithson Valley has senior quarterback Garrett Smith who has thrown for 1193 yards and 14 touchdowns, and impressively has still yet to thrown an interception. Converse Judson has senior quarterback RayJohn Austin-Ramsey who has thrown for 1468 yards and 14 touchdowns as well. He will be looking to find his favorite target senior receiver Andre Wilson who leads his team with 599 receiving yards and has 9 of Austin-Ramsey’s touchdown passes. Where the difference lies is the turnover battle Converse Judson averages 3.5 turnovers per game while Smithson Valley averages 2.1 takeaways per game. These numbers reflect on the quarterbacks as Smith still has a clean sheet and Austin-Ramsey has 8 interceptions. I’ll take the unbeaten team and the safer quarterback. Rangers win 48-38.

Texas high school footballLSG Writer Scott Says: The 2013 version of ‘Rocketball’ at Converse Judson is worthy of its lofty 5A ranking with its only loss coming at the hands of an outstanding Cibolo Steele team. RayJohn Austin-Ramsey operates the controls for the Rockets, throwing for 1,468 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. Andre Wilson is his top target with 599 yards and nine scores through the air. On defense, Justin Johnson and Malik Pryor lead the way. Smithson Valley quarterback Garrett Smith, who is verbally committed to Louisiana-Monroe, has been spectacular while leading his Rangers to nearly 50 points per contest. Spectacular a likely understatement because there are no words to describe 1,193 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and zero interceptions at a 70.3 percent clip while adding 587 yards and nine scores on the ground. Cameron Jones has nine touchdown runs to face the Rangers. Converse Judson, 41-38.
