The Battle Of The Axe Plus More Rivalries & Milestones

Texas high school football milestones

Texas high school football coaching and team milestones

Week Five is here and that means more rivalry games and milestones to go over.

For our rivalry games, we have a good one in West Texas where we have Abilene vs. Abilene Cooper. With its storied history, you would have thought Abilene led this series but Cooper is leading all-time 31-20-1. Another good one to watch will be Arlington Lamar vs. Arlington. Lamar leads this series all-time 22-19-1. Now...who says there will not be any good football this week with all the BYE games.

Somebody is going to get a milestone win when Los Fresnos (4-1) plays a high profile game against (3-1) Harlingen this week. Los Fresnos will be trying for their 350th all-time win while Harlingen will be trying for their 625th all-time win.

In the "Cool Named Games" category, we have the "Battle of the Axe" between Sherman and Denison. This is one of the longest running rivalry games in the state with 114 games being played between these two schools. Sherman leads the all-time series 68-38-8. Their first game was played in 1906. Since 1912, there have only been five years in which the game was not played, three of which were during World War I. 1949 was the first year in which the Ax was awarded to the winner of the game.

For coaching milestones, Midland head coach Craig Yenzer will be coaching in his 200th all-time games at his 3-1 Midland team take on 5-0 San Angelo Central. Jourdanton's head coach Wayne Johnson will be coaching in his 275th all-time game. Watch out for his team this year, they have gone 4-1 so far with their only loss being by 6 points to #2 Falls City.

For school milestones, Vernon who is featured in one of our games of the week will be going for their 625th all-time win. Newton (4-0) will play in their 800th all-time game when they take on (3-1) Kirbyville. Beaumont West Brook (3-1) will play in their 350th all-time game when they travel to La Porte (3-2).
