Texas High School Football Roundup for the Houston Area

Week 10

Texas high school footballTwo-Point Conversion Completes Clear Creek’s Title Run: Lake Conroe Clear Creek had never defeated Lake Conroe Clear Springs, going 0-5 all-time. This year the Wildcats needed to get through Clear Springs to cap an undefeated district run to the title. The game looked out of reach after C.J. Green’s 75-yard touchdown put Clear Creek on top 41-20, but the Chargers bounced with 21-straight of their own. They sent it to overtime tied at 55 on a running back pass from Matt Guidry to Zach Cripps, then Cripps opened up the extra frame with his third touchdown throw of the night. Jarrett Hildreth answered with a 25-yarder to Devon Smith, and rewarded his coaches’ trust with a two-point conversion to Landon Etzel for the win and the 24-5A title. Hildreth was the star of the night, throwing for 355 yards and five touchdowns, adding a rushing score of this own. Guidry also shined for the Chargers in the losing effort, racking up 226 yards for three scores with the game-tying touchdown pass. Unbelievable game to close out the regular season.

Stratford Puts Finishing Touches on 22-4A Run: Houston Stratford and Fort Bend Ridge Point have been on a collision course all through district play. If you’ve been following here, you know I have been particularly excited about it because the Spartans were an afterthought following a 1-2 start to the season. Today they are district champs after knocking off the Panthers 17-3. Terrence Peters led the way for Stratford, picking up 194 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Not to be outdone, Raqueem Boyd totaled 98 yards and a score on his 17 carries to create the effective 1-2 punch. The Stratford defense continued its dominating run as well in holding the Panthers to just three points and 190 yards. The Spartans allowed just 17 points through district play, and face Houston Wheatley in the opening round of the playoffs.

PA Memorial Mounts Furious Comeback En Route to Playoffs: Down 18 to La Porte late in the third quarter, Port Arthur Memorial and its playoff hopes looked lost. Then they remembered that this was a rivalry game, which are never really over. The Titans responded to the Bulldogs’ 21-point third quarter with a 20-point fourth quarter of their own. They completed the comeback with a touchdown inside the final minute to seal their second-place finish behind Galena Park North Shore. The Titans will face Pasadena Memorial in the first round of the playoffs.

Cy-Fair Emerges on Top in District 17-5A: Of all the districts in the area, this one was probably the hardest to get a grasp on. Houston Cypress Creek looked strong early, only to stumble late. Houston Jersey Village started 1-3 then started piling up some nice wins to finish the season. Houston Cypress Ridge also appeared to be a favorite, then end up losing two of its last three. Ultimately, it was Houston Cypress Fair that was able to seal the deal with an 8-1 district record, its only loss coming against Cy Ridge. The Bobcats suffocated Cy Creek on Friday to 145 yards in a 30-0 rout. Dillon Birden led the way with 128 rushing yards, while Clayton Kopecky tallied 169 yards of offense and three touchdowns.

No Surprises at the Top: Sure there was plenty of drama as area programs like Rosenberg Foster and Alief Taylor locked up unlikely playoff spots. But if you were looking for the big dogs to fall or show a weakness in the final week of the regular season, you were sorely disappointed. Katy cruised past a surprised Houston Memorial team 35-0 behind their two-headed monster of Rodney Anderson and Kyle Porter, and a defense that gave up just four first downs. North Shore also eased its way to an undefeated regular season with a 34-3 win over Deer Park. Tristian Houston needed just 12 carries to reach 174 yards and three touchdowns, and he figures to be an absolute terror in the postseason. In 4A, both Texas City and Humble Summer Creek capped off undefeated seasons in convincing fashion. Aaron Sharp closed his senior season with a 381-yard, five-touchdown performance, while the twin tandem of Armanti and D’Onta Foreman spearheaded a 468-yard rushing effort. Enjoy the normalcy, because it’s gone after this week.
