WEEK TEN

Central Texas:

Texas high school footballThe last week of the season is really playoff time for some schools and it was in District 25/4A as Leander won a showdown with Marble Falls for the last spot.   The Lions roared back from a 17 point halftime deficit, scoring four 3rd quarter touchdowns and winning it on a 4th down run by sophomore Ray Gibon.    District champion Cedar Park tuned up for defense of its state title, by pounding Dripping Springs 49-14.  The Wolves defense had two returns for touchdowns.  3A power Elgin and Manor rolled to easy wins.  The Simmons brothers, Te’Rel and Da’Trean accounted for five touchdowns as the Wildcats beat Cedar Creek 62-7, while Manor scored on its first five possessions enroute to an easy 54-14 win over ConnallyWestlake scored 28 points off five Austin High turnovers and shutout the Maroons 42-0, but lost outstanding junior LB Breckyn Hager to a shoulder injury.

Houston:

In the wildest shootout in the Bayou City, Clear Creek edged Clear Springs in a top QB matchup.  Creek’s Jarrett Hildreth passed for 355 yards and five touchdowns, while Springs Zach Cripps passed for 130, rushed for 137 and accounted for four scores.  It was Hildreths pass to Landon Etzel  for a two point conversion in the first overtime that provided the winning margin.  Sophomore Casey Rosellini passed for 392 yards and three scores for Cy Falls, but Cy Ranch’s RB duo of Charlie Booker and Bryce Johnson combined for 345 rushing yards and six tds, as Ranch beat Falls 54-28.  Alief Taylor shutout Hastings 55-0 with junior QB Remi Olanade passing for 402 yards and six scores.  Class 4A’s #4 team, Texas City rolled over Baytown Lee 56-25 as Texas commit Armanti Foreman rushed for 209 yards and three tds.  Class 4A’s #5 team, Summer Creek, rolled past Dayton 41-27 with QB Aaron Sharp (Kansas State commit) passed for 381 yards and five touchdowns.  Westfield beat Dekaney 31-14 with junior Latevius Downs rushing for 218 yards and two tds.  Two juniors had big rushing nights as North Shore’s Tristan Houston had 174 yards and two scores in a 34-3 win over Deer Park, while Brett Winnegan had 203 yards and three scores as Pearland Dawson beat Galena Park 51-17.  Fort Bend Marshall beat Willowridge 49-6 as junior QB JW Ketchum rushed for 141, passed for 99 and accounted for five touchdowns.  Freshman Myles Duke passed for 221 yards and three scores, while also rushing for three as Goose Creek Memorial beat Santa Fe 48-19.  Kolt Harfieldd passed for 399 yards and five scores in a losing cause, as FB Clements lost to Kempner 49-42.  Houston 5A powers Katy, Lamar, and Manvel rolled.  Katy, beating Memorial 35-0, Manvel  beating SOHO 48-20 and Lamar shutting out Chavez 63-0.

Dallas/Fort Worth:

4A’s top team Aledo set a state regular season scoring mark enroute to a 66-10 win over Trimble Tech.  The Bearcats scored an astounding 680 points to break Refugio’s record in 2011.  After having three forfeited wins reinstated, Arlington Martin beat Bowie 52-13 to claim the District 3/#A title.  Sophomore Nick Smith rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns.    Dallas Carter remained unbeaten in district play, scoring on its first five possessions to shutout Pinkston 48-0.    Desoto remained unbeaten with a 54-14 win over Mamsfield, with TCU commit Desmon White totallig 324 yards and  four scores.  Colleyville Heritage whacked LD Bell 79-16  as Griffin Pickler threw for 318 yards and six touchdowns and added another 96 yards on the ground.  Antonio Franklin rushed for 291 yards and five scores to lead Irving past MacArthur 49-25. DFW scoring leader Xavier Turner rushed for 263 yards and four tds on only 10 carries as Birdville pounded FW Poly 55-7.  Ronald Jones rushed for 235 yards and four tds to lead McKinney North past  Denison 49-37.  Decatur won a 56-53 shootout over Sanger as Grayson Muelstein threw for 349 and 6 tds, while rushing for another 103 yards.  Argyle looks to be the new #1 in Class 3A,  crushing Celina 63-13 with junior Nick Ralston rushing fo 146 yards and four touchdowns.

East Texas:

Two instant classics unfolded Friday night.  In Class 3A, #3 Kilgore upset #1 Gilmer 34-29 before a standing room only crowd.  Kilgore recovered four Gilmer fumbles, and Kevrin Justice scored on a 22 yard scamper with just 1:18 remaining for the victory.  Justice had 118 yards rushing and scored two additional times.  In Class 4A Whitehouse edged John Tyler 55-54  to claim their first district championship since 2006.  The win ended JT’s 23 game district winning streak and denied the Lions a fifth consecutive district championshop   Patrick Mahomes racked up 456 yards of total offense, accounting for 7 touchdowns, while John Tyler QB Geovari McCollister had 371 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.  Elsewhere another East Texas QB had a big night, as Corsicana’s Devontay Bell rushed for 370 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Tigers past Jacksonville 48-31.  Marcalas Johnson rushed for 160 yards and two scores to lead Arp past Winona 40-30.

West Texas:

Bushland QB Taylor Cornelius completed 31/40 for 341 yards and six tds to lead Bushland past Childress 56-21.   Cornelius goes over the 3000 yard mark heading into the playoffs.  In Class 1A, Booker QB Hunter Lile set a new 1A career mark of 9009 yards, throwing for 364 yards and five touchdowns in a 63-26 win over Shamrock.   Junior Wyatt Garton rushed for 319 yards and four scores as Canyon Randall beat Caprock 42-9. Lubbock Monterrey beat Lubbock High 63-35 as junior RB Vincent Johnson rushed for 319 yards and five tds.  Johnson finishes the regular season with 1834 yards and 20 touchdowns.   Class 1A #8 Stamford beat #7 Anson 24-21 in a mild upset   Odessa’s C.J. Eddison rushed for 243 yards and 3 tds as the Broncos beat Tascosa 30-28.

 Private Schools Championships: 

FW All Saints Foster Sawyer passed for 308 yards and five scores and All Saints beat Houston Christian  42-7 for the small school SPC championship.   Houston Kinkaid won the large school title, surviving a wild 59-45 shootout with St. Mark’s.   For Kinkaid, Junior QB JT Granato passed for 345 yards and five touchdowns,  junior WR Sam Mays caught 12 passes for 188 yards and four touchdowns, and RB Jacob Matthews ran for 192 yards.  For St. Mark’s, QB John Web completed 36/75 passes for 493 yards and four schools, with 258 yards on 17 catches going to WR William Caldwell.

UIL Playoffs start this week.
