Cedar Hill Stuns Katy To Win State Championship

The two teams faced each other last year with a 35-24 victory from Katy, but this year, both teams came ready to play. Cedar Hill started with the ball, taking up 3:38 off the clock with an impressive 54 yards in 10 plays ending with a 38 yard field goal from kicker Brooks Ralph. Katy first possession began with 25 yards from Rodney Anderson followed by another 20 yards. On their 4th down, Katy decided to go for it but fell short when quarterback Garrett Doiron was sacked by Cedar Hill’s Xavier Washington. The first quarter ended with Cedar Hill ahead 3-0.

With the start of the second quarter, the teams traded punts. With 9:42 left on the clock, Cedar Hill punts from their 42 yard line and Katy’s Rodney Anderson returns it for an 81 yard touchdown but Katy was holding and the touchdown was called back. With 5:26 left on the clock, Cedar Hill’s WR Damarkus Lodge takes off on a run but fumbles at Katy’s 42 yard line, the ball was recovered by Cedar Hill’s running back Denvre Daniels who runs the ball in for a touchdown; it was an 81 yard play. With 4:06 left of the second quarter, Cedar Hill leads Katy 10-0. Katy then turns right around and scores a 66 yard touchdown by Rodney Anderson making it 10-7 with 3:22 left. Following the touchdown, Katy recovers a fumble from Cedar Hill at their 44 yard line. With only one play, Doiron passes to wide receiver Sloan Spiller for a 44 yard touchdown. Katy leads Cedar Hill 14-10 with 2:08 left. Katy ended the second quarter by recovering another fumble and scoring a touchdown making it 21-10 Katy.

At the start of the third quarter, Katy starts off by getting a field goal taking a 24-10 lead. Cedar Hill then goes for it on 4th
and 3 at their own 38 and end up with a 62 yard touchdown from wide receiver Lodge. However the extra point was no good and Katy leads 24-16 with 4:02 left in the third. Cedar Hill stops Katy and takes over the ball at Katy’s 48 yard line with 2:00 left. Cedar Hill goes for it on 4th and 4 at Katy’s 42 yard line but the ball is intercepted by Katy’s defensive back Travis Whillock at Katy’s 34 yard line with 32 seconds left. The quarter ends with Katy leading 24-16.

With the fourth and last quarter underway, Cedar Hill’s kicker Ralph kicks a 25 yard field goal, making the score 24-19 with 8:28 left in the game. Katy takes over at their 30, however they fumble and Cedar Hill recovers at Katy’s 36 yard line. Cedar Hill’s Ware takes off on a 32 yard run ending on Katy’s 4 yard line. On 3rd and goal, Lodge catches a touchdown pass. Cedar Hill then fakes the extra point and runs in for a 2 point conversion leading Katy 27-24. Katy fumbles the kick off and Cedar Hill recovers at Katy’s 16 yard line. Ware then scored from 4 yards out and Cedar Hill leads Katy 34-24 with 3:17 left. Katy takes over at their 19 yard line but they were stopped on downs the rest of the game.

Cedar Hill came out with a 34-24 victory over Katy, making them the 2013 5A Division II Champions. Congratulations Cedar Hill on your victory.
