Who Are The Newcomers (Sort Of) To Class 5A

aberazziTen (10) schools look to be moving down and two (2) schools will be moving up in classification to Class 5A when the UIL announces the re-alignment changes this year. February 3rd will be the date the UIL makes the announcments.

Class 5A which was formally know as Class 4A will consist of schools between 1,060 and 2,099 students. These schools will also have the opportunity to petition the UIL to move them up to Class 6A. Several of these schools were very competitive in the largest classification which puts them as a title favorite in the 2nd largest.

The schools are (with their enrollment #'s) -- Abilene Cooper (2044), Lufkin (2088), San Marcos (2088), Rockwall-Heath (2087), McKinney (2074), Longview (2066), South Garland (1995), Grapevine (2085.5), Temple (2039), Houston Madison (2000). The school moving up from last years Class 3A are Lubbock-Cooper (1144) and Somerset (1063)

Abilene Cooper was last in 4A (what will now be 5A) in 2008 & 2009 where they had a record of 17-9. Other than that they have been in the largest class since 1980. San Marcos was also 4A in 2008 & 2009 and have bounced back and forth between the 2 classes over the years. Rockwall-Heath was only in the largest class the last 2 season after starting out in 4A in 2006. Houston Madison, Temple & Lufkin will be in a lower class for the first time. McKinney is another one of those that have bounced from 4A to 5A. They were last in 4A from 2004-2011. Longview will be another title contender. They were last in 4A in 2008 & 2009 and they played in the state championship game both years. It has been since 2001 that Grapevine has not been in the largest class. The two schools moving up are Lubbock-Cooper and Somerset who will move out of Class 3A for their first time.

The two East Texas teams of Lufkin and Longview will make immediate impacts along with West Texas power Abilene Cooper. This is one of our favorite classifications to watch and this year will be no different.
