The Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen were able to hire a state championship winning coach to replace Todd Pearson. New coach Wayne Hutchinson comes over from Stamford where he led the 1A school to 3 consecutive state championship games (2011-2013) winning 2 of them. Pearson resigned after 5 seasons going 22-34.

Hutchinson spent 8 years at Stamford going 75-25. The Bulldogs went 2-28 the 3 years before his arrival in 2006. His only other head coaching position was with Knox City before they started playing 6-man ball. His teams there went 29-14 during his 4 seasons with him. He also was an assistant coach at Abilene, Whiteright, Archer City and as a junior high coach in Kermit.

Pearson leaves the Plainsmen after taking over the job in 2009. His teams have made the playoffs for the past 4 seasons.

The former Stamford coach inherits a Monterey football program that had made the playoffs the past four years under Head Coach Todd Pearson. Pearson resigned following last season. He has been an assistant before that since 2002. Prior to Monterey, Pearson coached at Canyon, Amarillo High, Kermit, Kress and Cypress Falls.

The big question here is, can coach Hutchinson take his success from Class 1A to Class 6A?
