2014 LSG Team Preview — River City Believers Academy ☆

Team: River City Believers Academy (PRIVATE - 6 Man Division III, District 3)

School Colors: Maroon, Navy, White

Twitter: @RCBA_Soldiers

Stadium: Soldiers Field (Capacity: 250)

Coach: Jon Short (1st year); 0-0 all-time coaching record

Coaches Comments: Expect to see this team gel even more during the offseason to become a very strong unit by opening day! They are committed and focused and I believe this year is their best chance to make a playoff run! Three district opponents are perennial state champions in Castle Hills, Seguin Lifegate, and Fredericksburg Heritage. I believe our only challenge this year will be Castle Hills, (2014 State Champs). Their superstar player in Dante Johnson will be returning for his Senior year and we will need to put together an excellent plan to stop him and move past the first round of playoffs.

Returning Starters: Offense: 4 Defense: 5

Key Players:
* Michael Cottingham (sophmore) - will break 2500 yrds rushing
* Jacob Luna (senior) - lead the league in INT's and passing TD's
* Chris Cottingham (senior) - All-State 1st Team K, and leading tackler

Primary Offense: Pro Style

Primary Defense: 2-3-1

Notes:

  • Mike Says: The Soldiers went 6-5 last year and made the playoffs. This year they welcome a new head coach and a good core of returning starters. Look for them to improve a little this year and win 7 regular season games and make the playoffs again.
  • Chris Says: River City Believers Academy was a bit of an anomaly last season.  Our Natalie Newton covered them in  an article last season that absolutely blew up when it was picked up by other news sources.  The team made it to the playoffs but not much else.  This season, with a new head coach (Jon Short) and some expectations, the Soldiers are poised.  The competition is tough in their district so I don't expect them to take that title, but if they can win a couple of playoff games this season will be a success.
