Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year: Daingerfield’s DL Kelshin Neal

Texas high school footballDaingerfield defensive lineman Kelshin Neal is the LSG 2013 2A Defensive Player of the Year. Neal was also named Player of the Year for the Texas Sports Writers Association and Player of the Year for the Associated Press. Neal helped lead the Daingerfield Tigers all the way to the state quarterfinals where they lost to New Boston 41-14. Neal finished the season with 134 tackles, 46 tackles for loss, and 20 sacks. He also earned 1st Team honors by the TSWA and AP.

Coming in second in the voting was Post defensive lineman Thomas Basquez. Basquez ended the year with 125 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. Basquez, like Neal, earned TSWA and AP 1st Team honors. Behind Basquez was Abernathy linebacker Dru Lust. Lust had 135 tackles, 5 sacks, 6 interceptions, and 10 pass breakups. Those stats earned him 1st Team honors from both the TSWA and AP. We had three players tied for fourth in the voting this year, Cisco linebacker Mason Reed, Eastland defensive lineman Ryan Harris, and Tatum defensive back Klifton Willis. Mason Reed earned 1st team for TSWA and Honorable Mention from the AP. Ryan Harris was named to both the AP and TSWA 1s Teams and totaled 104 tackles, 20 that were solo and 84 assists, 20 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 pass breakups. Willis had 34 tackles, 11 INTs, 4 pass breakups, 2 defensive TDs and was named both 1st Team AP and TSWA.

Others in consideration: Hallettsville defensive back Dalton Herrington (143 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 12 pass breakups, 1 interception, AP 1st Team, 2nd Team TSWA), Lago Vista defensive lineman Colton Schwartz (109 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 4 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles, AP and TSWA 1st Team), Waskom defensive back Kevin Johnson (2nd Team TSWA), Frankston defensive back Cory Winks (62 tackles, 8 interceptions, 14 pass breakups, 6 blocked kicks, 1st Team AP, 2nd Team TSWA).
