Five Big Things in #txhsfb: 09/15/14 by Chris Doelle

Five Big Things in Texas High School Football

Its that time again… time for my Five BIG Things! These are the things that stood out for me recently as it relates to Texas high school football. As usual, they are not listed in order of importance – just as they come to me.

Chris Doelle - Texas high school football expert1. Jared Reagan shatters record! - When Booker downed Springlake-Earth 43-0, Jared Reagan grabbed 7 receptions for 113 yards and in doing so reached 313 catches and 3,861 yards for his Texas high school football career.  The receptions moved him past Jake Oliver's 308 career receptions and into first place all-time.  The best thing for Reagan is that he still has a bunch of games left to continue to put the record out of reach.  His quarterback, Hunter Lile is also in the top 5 all-time for passing attempts and completions.

2. Cold Front in #txhsfb? – Has anyone else noticed that the Winters Blizzards are sitting at 3-0 right now?  Big deal... lots of team are at 3-0, right?  Well this is a big deal in Winters because the last two seasons ended at 2-8 for the Blizzards.  Head Coach Stan Caffey is in his second season as head coach here after leaving Springlake-Earth as their all-time winningest coach.   In their victory last week over Ballinger, he picked up his 150th win in his 300th all-time game.  They face a very tough opponent this week in #7 ranked Hamlin  and this game will determine whether they are recipients of good scheduling, lucky breaks or are a serious threat.

3. Anything but 'so-so' – It appears that Sotonye "SoSo" Jamabo just gets better every time I see him play.  If you haven't seen the highlights from Plano West's 63-49 victory over Garland Sasche check it out. He is a blast to watch and he sort of reminds me of an Eddie George type running back.  He not flashy, not overly speedy, not overly aggressive... just a great balance of everything.  Yes, his line gives him excellent hole to begin his runs but after that it is his running intelligence that seems to take over.  He has an innate ability to choose the right angle and cut at the right time.  SoSo had an off week this time and I found I was missing seeing his highlights... that tells me he is something special.

4. Galena Park No Show - It appears that perennial powerhouse, the Galena Park North Shore Mustangs could drop their third straight game this week.   This is unheard of from a team that set the mark for regular season perfection with 78 straight regular season wins.  Does that mean the once-mighty Mustangs are done?  I think it means something much bigger.   Their loss to Manvel was expected by me because the Mavericks have so much talent, but the loss to Spring Westfield caught me off guard.  They go up against Euless Trinity this week and that should be every bit as tough as those two.   This isn't a sign that North Shore is washed up - rather it is a sign that they aren't content to rolling up amazing regular season records and then disappearing a few rounds deep in the playoffs.  They want to build a team that can go all the way.  To do that, you have to play the best around.  No, I don't think Galena Park North Shore is going to go all the way this season because they have been so battle-tested.  I do however, feel they will be a tougher out in the playoffs this time around and if they keep scheduling like this in pre-district, they could very well be a title team in a couple seasons.

5. John Curtis represents - I know, this isn't about a Texas high school football team because John Curtis Christian is a team in Louisiana, but I have to give props when deserved.  In my Game of the Week writeup, I dissed JCC and their 26 state championships saying " I don’t care how many times someone wins a Louisiana state championship… that means nothing in Texas.  You can win 600 state titles in another state and all that means it that the competition can’t be very strong," and I was called out by a father of one of the JCC players when they downed Lufkin 32-25.

@LSGridiron oops......Hey Chris, guess those State Championships don't lie. #26andcounting pic.twitter.com/T2Xbj2Rw9b

I have to give props to John Curtis Christian for their victory.  While I still believe 18 straight championship appearances means there is not a lot of competition in your state, you did down the top team in our Class 5A and in doing so played a great game.
