(links are to team histories – Premium content)

The Tradition: (Converse Judson Rockets) faces The Untested: (Cypress Ranch Mustangs) this week in the Class 6A Division I Semifinals. They will play at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Judson has been playing varsity ball since 1962 and has played in a record 17 state semifinal games and are tied for 2nd place all-time for championship games played (11) and tied for 7th place all-time for championship games won (6). Cypress Ranch has only been playing varsity ball for 5 seasons now. This is only the 2nd year that the Mustangs have made the playoffs (made it to the Quarterfinals in 2012) wild Judson has been to the playoffs 36 times now (they went to the Quarterfinals last year).

In addition to being relatively new to this level of playoff play, Cy Ranch has a much further drive:

Distance for each team to Alamodome:

Cy Ranch: 190 Miles
Converse Judson: 15 Miles

Gene Johnson, Cypress RanchWe were able to talk to Cypress Ranch Head Coach Gene Johnson to get his thoughts on the game.

Q: What kind of game can we expect?

A: I hope you can expect a game full of good sportsmanship and great football but void of injuries.

Q: How will your team handle playing a school like Judson that has such a rich history?

A: This will be a tremendous challenge for our program. It doesn’t get much tougher than playing the only team in the state that has reached the state semi-finals 17 times. We have a ton of respect for Converse Judson – both their program and what it has accomplished over the years as well as their team this year. It is a great opportunity for our kids to get to play such a great time in such a great stadium – The Alamodome.

Q: What is the secret to your success this season?

A: 1. Our offensive line play.

2. Our defense has improved greatly from last year as well as improving weekly this year.

3. The improved play of our quarterback – Collin Rock.

So what are your thoughts?  Will the tradition and experience of Converse Judson be too much for the Cypress Ranch Mustangs?  Will the passion and fire of the very young Cy Ranch team be too much for the Rockets?  Leave your comment below and then be sure to head to the Alamodome Saturday to watch what should be an excellent game.
