China Spring Knocks Off #1 Cameron Yoe

Is it time to panic in Cameron?

The China Spring Cougars beat top ranked and defending champion Cameron Yoe 43-41 in a wild game Friday night. This was a back and forth game with Cameron Yoe coming from behind to take the lead and then China Spring scored a touchdown with 24 seconds left to take the lead for good.

The Cougars took an early 23-7 lead before the Yoemen stormed back and China Spring led 30-22 at half. Yoe took the lead 41-37 with a little more than 3 minutes left in the game. China Spring got a good return and a penalty to start their final drive at the Yoe 45 yard line. They were able to push it over from 1 yard out with 24 seconds remaining to get the win.

The Yoemen were ranked #1 in Class 3A Division I. They have won 3 consecutive state championships. The Cougars were ranked #23 in Class 4A Division I. Even though China Spring's enrollment (718 enrollment) is more than 300 more than Cameron Yoe (390 enrollment) this was considered an upset.

China Spring (District 13-4A DI) is now 3-0 on the season and will play Bullard (2-1) at Corsicana next week. Cameron Yoe (District 10-3A DI) (TEAM PREVIEW) falls to 2-1 and they will play at  Whitney (3-0) next week.

Now this opens up the rankings to a controversial discussion. Chris Doelle and I have already began arguing over the matter. Both #1 Cameron Yoe and #2 Shallowater (Lost to #25 4A DII Midland Greenwood 48-51 in OT) lost this week. Does that mean that #3 Brock is now the #1 ranked team? Brock has now outscored their 3 opponents 179-7. It has not been against bad competition either....take away the losses to Brock and their 3 opponents have a combined record of 5-1.

Mike Says: Brock #1

Chris Says: This happened to Cameron Yoe last year as they dropped a couple early on.  Coach Rhoades isn't focused on winning games in pre-district, he is focused on learning about his team and his players learning their positions.  Yoe is STILL the best team and will roll through district and the playoffs once again.
