Cedar Park Routs Rival Vista Ridge for District 25-5A Title

Timberwolves Finish Regular Season 10-0 and Take Home Mayor's Cup
With a solid performance on both sides of the ball, second-ranked Cedar Park capped off a perfect regular season Friday night at Gupton Stadium with a 48-21 rout of district rivals, fifteenth-ranked Cedar Park Vista Ridge. The win also earned Cedar Park the Cedar Park Mayor’s Cup (awarded to the winner of this in-town rivalry) and the District 25-5A title.
Defensively, Cedar Park held the run-heavy Vista Ridge offense in check allowing only seven points and holding Vista Ridge to 0 passing yards in the first half. Offensively, the Timberwolves generated over 400 yards of total offense and scored six touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jack Grimm accounted for all three of Cedar Park’s first-half touchdowns. Junior running back Jav Guidry, senior running back William Richter, and senior wide receiver Tommy Levine each scored a touchdown in the second half.
For Vista Ridge, the Rangers’ offense managed to accumulate about 320 yards of total offense mostly on the ground. Senior running back Isaiah Vilaire scored two touchdowns for the Rangers, and senior Jeremiah Chambers added another.
During the opening kickoff, the game got off to an ominous start for Vista Ridge. The Rangers were lucky to recover their own fumble on the return. Two plays later, the Cedar Park defense forced Vilaire backwards for a loss of 21 yards. Fortunately for the Rangers, a personal foul on the Timberwolves gave the Rangers 15 of those yards back and a first down. Despite the break, Vista Ridge could not capitalize as Vilaire fumbled the ball giving it to Cedar Park at the Timberwolves’ 45-yard line.
Following the fumble, the Timberwolves capped a ten-play 55-yard drive with a 13-yard rush by Jack Grimm to take a 7-0 lead. On the ensuing drive, Vista Ridge knotted up the score at 7-7 with 55-yard touchdown run by Vilaire. Following the Ranger touchdown, Cedar Park was forced to settle for a field goal despite excellent starting field position.
After forcing Vista Ridge to go three-and-out, sophomore quarterback Max Sexton connected with Grimm on a 48-yard pass to make the score 17-7. Just before halftime, Grimm found the end zone again on a three-yard run to put Cedar Park up 24-7 going into the break.
To begin the second half, Cedar Park wasted little time increasing their lead with a 68-yard touchdown run by Jav Guidry. Vista Ridge responded by narrowing the gap to 31-14 with a one-yard touchdown run by Chambers on their next drive. That would be as close as Vista Ridge got for the rest of the game.
Cedar Park responded to the Vista Ridge score with 28-yard touchdown run courtesy of Tommy Levine and a 34-yard field goal. Isaiah Vilaire scored on a 67-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for Vista Ridge, but Cedar Park responded with an 11-yard touchdown run by Tommy Levine to seal the win and the district title for the Timberwolves.
With the win, Cedar Park finished the regular season at 10-0 overall and 7-0 in district.
Up next, the Timberwolves begin their quest for a state title against Bastrop in the Bi-district round. The Bears finished third in District 26-5A. According to reports, the game will be Thursday night at Gupton Stadium.
Head coach Carl Asbeck is confident that his team is hungry for a championship and that they can reach that goal. "I love the way our team is playing right now. Our goal is to go 16-0,” he said.
Vista Ridge, meanwhile, finishes the regular season at 8-2 overall and 5-2 in district. The Rangers will face District 26-5A champion Austin LBJ at a time and location to be determined.
