Tigers D: 16 Quarters Without Giving Up a Point

Rhodes Stadium- The talk around the stadium and in the press box Saturday was, “is this the best Katy defense ever?” Collin Wilder and his rowdy bunch think so and its hard to argue against him. The Tigers turned in their 7th shut out on the year last weekend. The Katy Tigers once again are district champions and head to the playoffs as LSG’s co #1 team in 6A with Allen as they beat the Cinco Ranch Cougars on Saturday, 24-0. It is Katy's 7th consecutive district championship. Katy is 10-0 on the season and will face Houston Westside at Rhodes Friday night for the first game in the playoffs. With the loss the Cougars fall to 9-1 and will face Houston Bellaire on Saturday at 1pm.

Wilder said this about broaching the idea of the best Katy defense ever, “I definitely believe so because I am that confident in our defense. I believe this is the best defense we have ever had just because how hard we work how hard we have been working and how much we want to get better still. This can be the and will be the best defense we have eve had.”

“If they don't score they don't win”, Wilder added, “That's our motto. This defense has a bunch of talent alone but when everybody is doing their job and wanting to get better each week and trying to all get on the same page that's special”.

The opening eight-play Katy drive stalled. Cinco Ranch stopped them at their own 34 yard line as Ben Mathiasmeier strung out Katy freshman running back Deondrick Glass and the Wildcat defense corralled him for a 3 yard loss.   Katy punted and seemingly had the Wildcats pinned at their own goal line but Kadarius Page watched it bounce right through his legs for a touchback as the whole stadium let out a collective groan.

Cinco Ranch quarterback Russell Morrison then had two big 3rd and long conversions, one a 23 yard scramble and then another 14 yarder. Katy defensive end Michal Matus sacked Morrison and the Cougars were forced to punt.

Katy and Cinco then traded punts before Cinco had its best drive of the night. The Wildcat offense had been averaging 377 yards per game and had scoring opportunities in the first half before the Katy defense really buckled down on them. On 4th and 1 at the Tiger 19, Coach Don Clayton elected to go for it. Running back Devion Johnson appeared to have gotten the first down but the referees marked him short.

Once again Katy and Cinco traded possessions before Coach Gary Joseph and his Tiger offense reached into their bag of tricks.  What they pulled out was a receiver pass from Tony Mullins to a wide open Kyle Williams for a 34 yard touchdown pass on first down.  The 7-0 lead was all they would need to win the game.

Katy was later aided by a bad Cinco Ranch punt to score right before half. Kris Perez nailed a 42 yard field goal with the wind at his back making it 10-0 Tigers.

In the second half Katy had its first scoring drive after a Collin Wilder interception. Quarterback Garrett Doiron hit Tony Mullins for 32 yards setting up the Tigers with 1st and goal at the 8 yard line. Glass carried for 6 yards and then finished it off from 2 yards out to stretch the score to 17-0 Katy.

In the fourth quarter, Kyle Williams caught his second touchdown to end the scoring on the day.  The play came on 4th and 10 when Williams was wide open again, this time from 24 yards out.  That ended the scoring 24-0.
