Bremond Runs Away With Another Title

Bremond (16-0) vs. Albany (14-2)
Texas High School Football Class 2A DII State Championship
1 p.m. Thursday, NRG Stadium, Houston

NRG Stadium - The Bremond Tigers won their 2nd consecutive and 3rd overall state championship with a 35-20 win over the Albany Lions in Class 2A Division II.   This was a rematch from last years championship game where Bremond won 28-21.    The Tigers are now 3-4 in state championship games having won in 1981 and 2014 while losing in 1983, 1987, 1993 and 2007.   The Lions are now 2-5 in state championship games having won in 1960 and 1961 while losing in 1954, 1991, 2009 and last year.   This was Bremond's 31st consecutive win and are 43-1 over the last 3 years.

Albany looked to be ready to avenge their loss last year after stopping Bremond with a 3 and out to start the game.  The Lions then went on a 74 yard scoring drive.  Both defenses played well for the remainder of the quarter and the score after one was Albany 7, Bremond 0.

After the initial feeling out period, Bremond kicked things into gear.  The Tigers opened the 2nd half with a 64 yard drive that ended with a touchdown run from QB Roshauud Paul.   A little over 2 minutes later Paul scored again.  This time on a dazzling 55 yard run where he stumbled twice, reversed his field and outraced everyone to the end zone.   After a Joe Williams interception, Paul scored his 3rd touchdown of the quarter to make the score 21-7 with 43 seconds left.   Albany got the ball back and completed a long pass but the receiver was tackled at the 11 as the clock ran out in the first half.

Bremond Head Coach Jeff Kasowski had this to say about Roshauud's performance, "He's great.  He loves to play.  He's a great competitor.  He's coachable and he's calm.  That's good."

Albany started the 2nd half like they started the first half with a long drive.  They were not able to get the score though as they turned the ball over on downs inside the Bremond 20.   The Tigers took over and scored on a 62 yard pass from Paul to Rayandre Browning  to make the score 28-7 with 7:13 left in the 3rd. Albany took their next drive down to the Bremond 2 yard line and once again, they could not punch it in.   They could not convert on a 4th down play again. The third quarter ended with Bremond leading 28-7.

The final period started with some fire for Albany. After a Bremond fumble at the Lion 27 yard line, quarterback Drew Neece took off up the middle for a 72 yard touchdown.  The score sat at 28-14 with 9:19 left in the game and had the Albany fans ready for a comeback.   It seemed to be setting up perfectly as Albany forced Bremond to punt and drove to the Tigers side of the field.  It came crashing to an end when Joe Williams picked off his 2nd pass of the day this time in the end zone.

The Tigers went on an 80 yard drive and Paul scored on another run to extend the lead to 35-14 and effectively put the game out of reach.   Neese scored a late touchdown to bring the final to 35-20 but it was too late to change the outcome.  In the end, Bremond's defense in the redzone appeared to be a huge difference maker.  They stopped Albany 3 times in the redzone.

Albany Head Coach Denny Faith commented afterward, “Football is a big part of their life, but its over now.  I can promise you its made them better men.”

When asked what it mean to have the same core of players the last three years, “You watch them play 3 years ago in the semi-finals and some of them didn't even have hair on their legs.  To watch them grow up and become men, the way they’ve performed with the class they’ve done it with and show the respect to their opponents and the love of the game, its gratifying to me as a coach.”

Rayande Browing mentioned this about the repeat title wins, "To me I compare it to singers - a one hit wonder.  If you win one, ,you may never be heard from again, but if you win another one back-to-back, that's something special."
