Ridge Point Can't Stop Timberwolves

NRG- Nothing was going to stop Cedar Park this year. One year removed from losing to Ennis in the 5A DI state championship game, these Cedar Park Timberwolves just wanted to return for another chance at the crown. They lost their coach from last year to Colleyville Heritage. They opened the season once again against Division II champion Aledo, this year winning the matchup. And they finally went undefeated in the regular season. All that was left in their way were the hometown Fort Bend Ridge Point Panthers playing in only their 3rd post season game.

This Cedar Park (#2 ranked team 5A LSG) team along with first year Coach Carl Abseck cruised along in a hard fought 38-17 win on Saturday. Behind a tough defense and an offense that saw six different running backs tote the rock, the Timberwolves will be returning to Houston next weekend to face 1-loss Frisco Lone Star.

Jav Guidry stood out the most (2 TDs and a 66 yarder falling 1 yard short of 3 TDs) of all the Wolf ball carriers as they rolled up 360 yards on 61 rushes. Guidry said this about this years run in the playoffs compared to last years, “We used that as fuel for this year, and we talked about going 1-0 each week, worry about this week, don't worry about the rankings or anything, just focus on this week.”

Ridge Point struck first on their second offensive series. Panther QB Shane Gosson found Shyler Staton (Air Force pledge) for 31 yards and an early 7-0 lead. Gosson had little success suffering 3 interceptions. The Panther ground game was stuffed also by the tough Timberwolf D. Stud junior tailback B. J. Rainford and his cohorts were kept in check with only 61 rushing yards on the day.

Cedar Park scored the next 25 points. Guidry raced around the left end on a 9 play drive for 11 yards. After the blocked PAT, Cedar Park trailed 7-6.  Quarterback Mak Sexton found Tommy Lavine for a 47 yard touchdown toss and a 12-7 lead when the fake PAT came up short.  Next Guidry added a 15 yard TD run, this time the Wolves went for 2 but it failed. 18-7 was the Cedar Park lead . After forcing a 3 and out the Timberwolves faced a 4th and 4 from the 28. Coach Abseck called back to back timeouts dialing up a 13 yard Sexton to running back Jack Grimm pass. Grimm went to the air, flipping into the end zone from 3 yards out. The score was 25-7 after Cedar Park finally went for the conventional PAT and it worked.

In the third quarter Ridge Point cut into the Timberwolf lead with an 8 yard Gosson to massive sophomore receiver Mustapha Muhammad (6-4, 210) TD pass.  They also added a field goal that cut the Cedar Park lead to 25-17.

Collin Kramr intercepted Gosson for his second of the day. Guidry raced through a hole and 66 yards later the official somehow marked him down at the 1 yard line. Tyler Lavine finished it off from 1 yard out to extend the score 32-17.

Guidry said this about their six-headed running back monster, “That we are dynamic and you don't know who is gonna score?! We are just gonna make a big play and keep defenses on their toes.”

Hayden Craig scored with 54 seconds left from 2 yards out finishing off the Panthers, 38-17. Ridge Point and Coach Brett Sniffin will move up in classification next year to 6A.

Coach Abseck said this about the impending championship game, “One of our goals is to have the opportunity to get back here and we have a great group of kids that have worked really hard and they’ve given themselves the shot! We're going back!”
