Katy Advances Behind Porter’s Big Night

NRG- In one of the most anticipated rematches of the entire 2015 Texas high school football season, the game between the Katy Tigers and Manvel Mavericks only drama was whether or not the Mavericks could catch up. In the end, Katy's early lead was too much to overcome as Manvel fell 35-17. Mistakes, penalties and costly turnovers once again were insurmountable for this Mav team facing Katy for the 3rd consecutive year in the state quarterfinals.

Manvel spotted Katy 21 points to start the game. Their very first decision was costly and began their slide. Manvel won the toss and elected to receive. Katy’s pooch kick was fielded by Cam Scott who called for a fair catch but bobbled it and Katy senior Colton Walker fell on it. Six plays later, aided by a big Deontay Anderson personal foul, the Tigers were in the end zone. Kyle Porter banged his way in from 2 yards out to score the first of his five touchdowns on the night, 7-0 Katy.

The Katy defense, one of the top units in the nation, was on point also limiting the Manvel offensive juggernaut to 236 total yards. That was their low on the year. They forced a 3 and out for Manvel's first drive.

Katy then punished the Mavericks with an 80 yard drive. Quarterback Garrett Doiron found receiver Jaxon Borowski on first the first play for 30 yards setting them up at midfield. Six plays later, Kyle Porter found a huge hole on the right side and rumbled in from 30 yards out.  They Tigers lead 14-0. Porter finished with 30 carries for 200 yards (6.7 ypc) and those 5 monster touchdowns.

His next score was set up by a big Collin Wilder (UH commit) 43 yard punt return. This is what Katy does to teams, they control the line of scrimmage, play incredible defense and they don't make costly mistakes. Manvel kept it closer than their previous two contests but 21 points was too much of a deficit against a team that they know their modus operandi.

Manvel star tailback D’Vaughn Pennamon (Ole Miss) and his counterpart D’Eriq King (TCU) playing against the biggest defense they have seen this year could never find a groove. King in particular was stymied, only passing for 173 yards and an interception. Pennamon scored Manvel’s first touchdown from 11 yards out to cut the lead to 21-7. An Enis Sefa field goal cut the lead to 11 with 9:58 til the half, 21-10.

Manvel was trying to limit the damage and go in the half only trailing by 11 but punter Deidrique Anderson shanked a 15 yard punt setting Katy up at the Mav 49 yard line with over 3 minutes on the clock.

Katy tried a double reverse pass and the Manvel D sniffed it out. Katy recovered and the next play Kyle Porter took a counter handoff 29 yards down to the Manvel 4.  On the ensuing play, Porter took the toss sweep right into the end zone with 39 seconds left before intermission. It was his 4th toss right touchdown of the game.   Katy went into the break up 28-10.

An 80 yard King to Sean Dykes (Memphis commit) pulled the Mavericks back to within 11 points early in the third, 28-17. Deontay Anderson had a beautiful interception of Doiron and returned it all the way back to the Katy 26. It seemed that Manvel was about to make it the closest game these teams have had in 3 years. The Katy defense then stepped up once again forcing Manvel to settle for another Sefa field goal.

And it finally looked like luck had crossed over to the Manvel side when a roughing the holder penalty gave Manvel a fresh set of downs to work with. Katy linebacker Breydon Boyd had blocked the kick, resulting in a fair game of running into anyone on the kicking team. Unfortunately for the Mavs the call was reversed with some Gary Joseph lobbying.

Five plays later and Kyle Porter housed a 58 yarder and effectively ended the game with just over 2 minutes left to play.Next up for Katy is Cibolo Steele in another rematch game.
