Katy Ties For Most State Titles

Katy (16-0) vs. Austin Lake Travis (15-1)
Texas High School Football Class 5A DII State Championship
8:00 p.m. Saturday, NRG Stadium, Houston

NRG Stadium - The Katy Tigers won their 8th state championship with a 34-7 win over the Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers in the Class 6A Division II Championship.   The eight wins ties them with Celina and Southlake Carroll for the most in state history.  They are now 8-6 overall in the big game.  The 14 championship game is 4 more than anyone else.  Austin Lake Travis falls to 5-1 in state championship games.  The Cavaliers won 5 consecutive championships from 2007 through 2011.  They are the first and only team  to win 5 consecutive titles.

When asked about his players getting the win, Katy Head Coach Gary Joseph exclaimed, "They needed to feel this.  They worked their butt off to get here. I'm so proud that they get to feel this."

This was the matchup many people around the state have been looking forward to for years as two of the top programs in the state have never faced off against each other.  Katy brought into the game arguably the best defense in Class 6A history (only 62 points allowed all season) and Lake Travis bought in a team dominant on both sides of the ball.  In the end, Katy's D was too much.

Lake Travis started the game off with a nice drive but had a pass intercepted by Katy’s Tyler Pullig in Tiger territory.   Katy then went on a 54 yard drive into Travis territory and kicker Kris Perez hit a 48 yard field goal to make the score 3-0 with 4:57 left in the first quarter.   After a Cavalier punt, Katy started at their 15 yard line and is driving as the quarter ended.

The Tigers drive stalled and they attempted a 36 yard field goal but it was blocked.  Lake Travis began their next drive at their 36.  The ball was fumbled  and Katy linebacker Paddy Fisher took it to the Travis 5 yard line.  One play later, running back Kyle Porter scrambled in for the touchdown.  Katy lead 10-0 with 9:04 remaining in the 2nd quarter.  On the Cavalier’s next possession, lineman Michael Matus picked it off and rambled 53 yards for the score.  That made the score 17-0 with 8:44 left until half.   The Katy defense continued to play tough while the Travis defense intercepted two Katy passes.  The final interception was at their own 31.   The Cavaliers took it from there and finally got their passing game working and  finally got into the end zone on a pass to Cade Green.  The Lake Travis scores cut it to 17-7 with  20 seconds left and that is how the half ended.

Katy started the 2nd half with a drive that milked 5 ½ minutes off the clock before ending with the ball turned over on downs.  The next three series ended in punts.  Katy was driving as the final ticks of the 3rd quarter rolled off the clock.

The Tigers got another score with 7:15 left in the quarter when Porter scored from 4 yards out to bring the score to 24-7.   Katy then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.  They converted that into a Perez field goal from 30 yards out.  With 3:36 remaining in the game, Offensive MVP, Kyle Porter scored again this time from 45 yards out to end the scoring at 34-7.

When asked if there was any one thing he was most proud of about this group of athletes, Coach Joseph was quick to respond, "Their resiliency.  People prepare their whole life to take their one shot and we were gonna take our best shot with this game... and we did."
