PN-G Makes Short Work of Goose Creek

Baytown Stallworth Stadium- A week after #104 Class 5A Port Neches-Groves' super sophomore quarterback Roschon Johnson torched Silsbee for 5 first half touchdowns (3 rushing, 2 passing) all eyes were on him, including the #246 Class 6A Baytown Goose Creek Memorial Patriots defense. They should have kept their eyes on tailback Preston Hughes as he gobbled up easy yardage (13 rushes, 172 yards, 13.2 ypc). After the dust had settled in this matchup the Port Neches-Groves Indians cruised to another easy victory moving to 2-0 on the season, 42-7.
Coach Brandon Faircloth came up with a great game plan using Johnson as a decoy and gashing the Patriot defense with the junior tailback up the defense’s underbelly. Hughes finished with 3 touchdowns and the Indians gained 310 total yards (111 passing, 199 running) all in the first half
PN-G’s first half drives all lasted less than two minutes. The first Indian TD came on an 11-yard run Hughes run. Then the 6' 3" sophomore sensation Johnson took over. He sprinted past everybody down the right sideline 46 yards that showcased his elusiveness. Keynel McZeal, the 6' 4" 225 lb Texas A&M commit showed why recruiters consider him the state’s top pass catching tight end. McNeal finished with 5 catches for 58 yards including a nice first down snag on their 3rd drive. That drive ended with another 31 yard TD run for Hughes. The final score on the half came as Hughes sprinted in from 38 yards.
The Indians scored on all but one drive and stymied the Memorial offense. The Indians rush defense was stifling as they only allowed 4 rushing yards before the break.
The second half was more of the same as albeit at a slower pace. In was then that Goose Creek managed their only score of the game. The Patriots scored on a beautiful Deandre Herman 61 yard scamper in the 3rd quarter. This has thus far been the Patriots only score on the season.
Next week Port Neches-Groves gets Lumberton in their district opener while Goose Creek Memorial looks to move from last place in Class 6A when they take on Santa Fe.
