Toughest District in Football?

Texas high school football

District 15-21 D1 = The Little SEC

If you think the opening weekend of college football in Texas was a blast…  wait until District 15-2A Division 1 starts district play…  or better yet, is unleashed in the playoffs against the rest of the state.

Some folks around the state have started referring to the district as the Little SEC with four teams ranked in our Class 2A polls.  Shiner, Refugio, Yorktown and Weimar all in our Top Ten.

District 15-21 DI (rankings as of Week Three)

  • Refugio #1
  • Shiner #2
  • Yorktown #6
  • Weimar #10
  • Ganado #42
  • Kenedy #80

District play kicks off on Week 7 for these wild and woolly squads.  These six teams will play in a smash’em up round robin series that will crown on team as District Champs and send four to the playoffs.

“The teams that survive this arduous district will be tested by fire and ready for long playoff runs.”  Says Coach John David Caffey of Yorktown.

He then goes deeper, “There is not a week in which you cannot be at the height of preparation and performance.  If you do not match every team's intensity you could find yourself on the outside looking in when playoffs come around.  Last year all four playoff teams met up in the third round and there is a possibility that could happen again.”

“I like the little SEC moniker.”  Coach Caffey adds

To say this district is loaded is a severe understatement:

  • Weimar is 2-0.  (32-13 over Wallis Brazos & 27-16 over Austin St. Michaels)
  •  Refugio stays #1 in the state with 2 blowouts (59-13 against Hebbronville & 44-13 over Goliad)
  •  Yorktown is undefeated at 2-0.  (16-6 over Shiner St. Paul & 23-22 over Universal City Randolph)
  •  Ganado is 2-0 (47-8 over Louise & 8-0 over Palacios)
  •  Shiner who won the district title last year, is the only one of the top five teams not in the undefeated ranks. (34-13 over Goliad & 35-21 loss to 3A DI Hallettsville.)

“I think top to bottom it is the toughest football district in the state.” Coach Jason Herring of Refugio commented.

All four of the top teams played in the Region final last year with Refugio finishing as a state runner up to 2 time champion Canadian.

“With four teams being ranked and preseason #1 and #2 in there, I don't think anyone can argue that.  This district not only has tremendous teams with great athletes, but it also has great coaching with four of the coaches in the District having won State Titles in the past,”  Herring added.

Coach Herring says this with top athlete in district with quarterback Jaylon Mascorro.  Mascorro is a University of Houston commit, “I believe each and every week you better be ready to strap it on.  In saying that, I think the four teams that make the playoffs out of this district have a good chance to make deep playoff runs just like last year.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see any one of the teams in our district in the finals come late December.  I think early on, most people would probably pick Refugio and Shiner as the favorites, but I am telling you, people better not sleep on Weimar, Ganado, and Yorktown.”

Indeed this district is loaded and we can only expect some rough and tumble games from district play and beyond.
