East Texas High School Football Power Continues to Strenthen

The phrase "in championship form" doesn't come close to describing how good the defending Class 4A Division II champion,  West Orange-Stark Mustangs look right now.  They were our preseason #1 team in Class 4A DII and have remained at the top of the poll all year.  We had them knocking off Celina in the State Championship game when we made our preseason championship predictions.  Celina has slipped a bit, but these Mustangs certainly have not.

2016 Results

8/26 vs Nederland (2-3) (W 42-0)
9/2 at Little Cypress-Mauriceville (2-2) (W 45-0)
9/9 at Bridge City (2-2) (W 55-0)
9/16 vs Houston KIPP Northeast (1-3) (W 61-0)
9/23 vs Silsbee (1-3) (W 51-2)

In that stretch the Mustangs have outscored opponents 255-2.  Going back to last season, they have won their last 16 games and in that time only given up more than 15 once (41-28 vs Cuero in the Semifinal Championship) and 3 or less 13 times!

In fact, under Head Coach Cornell Thompson, WO-S has been an absolute powerhouse:

2016 12-4A DII 5 0 0 Cornel Thompson
2015 9-4A DII 15 1 0 Cornel Thompson
2014 9-4A DII 13 3 0 Cornel Thompson
2013 21-3A 11 2 0 Cornel Thompson
2012 21-3A 13 1 0 Cornel Thompson
2011 21-3A 10 4 0 Cornel Thompson

In related news, the West Orange-Stark High School football field was dedicated and renamed as Leroy D. Breedlove Field on last Friday before the game.

Mr. Breedlove is a retired WOCCISD athletic coach and physical education instructor who worked at multiple district campuses from 1964 -1998. He has played a role in the district in a wide range of positions that included football, basketball, and track, as well as mathematics.

For the record, the West Orange-Stark football team will call home the Dan R. Hooks Stadium and Leroy D. Breedlove Field.

PS.  I made it through a whole WO-S article without mentioning one of my favorite QBs...  you know who I'm talking about!
