Cinco Ranch Turns the Page to Victory

Tyler Page Out on First Play - Cinco Rolls

An injury played a big part in the Class 6A Region III, Division II Regional playoff game between the Mustangs from Friendswood and the Cougars from Katy Cinco Ranch.   The Mustangs came into the game considered the favorite by most around the state.   They were a favorite because of their quarterback Tyler Page who got injured early in this game.  Page was one of the states top rushers with 2,094 yards coming into the game.   The Cougars not only won but they won big as they came away with a 34-7 victory.   The Mustangs ended their season with a record of 9-3 while the Cougars advance to the Quarterfinals with a 10-3 record.

Friendswood started the game with the ball and on the first play from scrimmage, superstar quarterback Tyler Page went down with what has been reported as a broken ankle.   Junior Justin Karam came in as the backup and drove the team down the field but they failed on a 4th down conversion from the Cinco Ranch 42.    After the teams traded punts, Cougars receiver Greg Williams took the ball on a end around and he took it in from 15 yards out.   With 3:44 left in the 1st, Cinco Ranch led 7-0.    After Friendswood punted, the quarter ended with the Cougars driving.

After a six play, 49 yard drive Cougar James Klingler scored on a quarterback run from 15 yards out.  The extra point made it 14-0 Cinco Ranch with 11:40 left in the 2nd quarter. The rest of the quarter had no more scoring with Cinco Ranch controlling the clock. The Cougars had a chance as the half ended to add a field goal but their 38 yard field goal went wide left. At half, Cinco had a 184-42 yardage advantage.

The Cougars got the ball to start the 2nd half and running back Brant Kuithe took the ball 71 yards for a score on the 2nd play from scrimmage. With the score, Cinco Ranch extended their lead to 21-0. Friendswood finally got on the board three plays later as running back Elijah Blackburn took it up the middle for a 61 yard scoring run. With 10:02 left in the 3rd quarter, Cinco Ranch's lead was cut to 21-7.   The Cougars were able to extend their lead with 30 seconds left in the 3rd. To set up this score, Josh Ofili recovered a Friendswood fumble at the Mustang 32 yards line. Receiver Blake Gordon then caught a 32 yard pass from Klingler for the touchdown a few plays later. The extra point was missed. The Cougars led 27-7 going into the final quarter.

The Mustangs punted on their first possession of the 4th quarter. The Cougars then took advantage of a short field going 50 yards on seven plays as Kuithe took it in from 1 yard out with 8:03 left in the game.  The Cougars' 34-7 lead would be the final score.  The teams traded punts to end the game. The Cougars had 377 total yards to the Mustangs 189.
