Saenz Replaces Lehnhoff at Steele
Cibolo Steele didn't have to look far to find a replacement for Scott Lehnhoff - who took the Knights to the state championship game last year. The new Steele Coach may have a different last name, but he has history with the team. David Saenz who has been the co-defensive coordinator the past four seasons, has been named the new head football coach. Saenz has been on the Knights coaching staff since their first varsity season in 2006. This is just the latest in a history of Steele keeping it "in the family."
Lehnhoff who led the Knights for the past 4 years going 53-7 that included a state championship appearance last year became the district's new athletic director. This was his first and only head coaching position. Before taking over as Head Coach, he was the offensive coordinator/assistant coach with the Knights since 2005. He was previously an assistant at San Antonio Lee.
Coaching runs in the family for Scott. Coach Lehnhoff's new position as Athletic Director was a post his father, Robert Lehnhoff, held for 30 years before retiring in June 2012. Robert was a longtime Schertz Clemens football coach. He went 182-80-4 in 23 seasons (1982-2004) with the Buffaloes, and led them to the state semifinals twice.
Scott's grandfather is Fritz Lehnhoff who coached at Marble Falls (1951-1961 78-30-6) and Poth (1962-1972 78-38-4). Fritz's all-time high school coaching record sits at 156-68-10. He also spent time as the Head Coach at Texas Lutheran College for a while. When Fritz was an Assistant Coach at Mission, he coached future Dallas Cowboys legendary Head Coach Tom Landry.
Scott is a 1999 graduate of Clemens. He played quarterback for his father before going on to play college baseball at Baylor. The district's football stadium was named after Scott's parents, Robert and Glenda Lehnhoff in 2010.
