Last Week:
Stratford beat Friona 29-18
Canadian beat Amarillo River Road 48-21

  • Texas high school footballMike Says: Stratford won this game last year on their way to the Quarterfinals. This year though, we have Canadian picked to play in the 2A Division II Championship game. Last week, Stratford’s defense recorded 6 sacks and 3 INTs. They will need that kind of performance again to stop Canadian’s pass/catch duo of QB Ben Arbuckle and WR Boston Hudson. Stratford’s Head Coach Eddie Metcalf needs 1 more win to be all-time winningest coach at Stratford (95-28-0) to pass Brad Thiessen 1994-2003 (95-26-0). Sorry coach but it will not happen this week. The WILDCATS win it 21-14!!
  • Texas high school footballChris Says:  Normally, when there are two top teams separated by just one classification level, it doesn’t matter a lot.  Whether you are 2A or 1A doesn’t matter much for the teams at the top of their game.  The big difference here is not the fact that Canadian is Class 2A and Stratford is Class 1A.  The big difference is frankly, Ben Arbuckle.  This quarterback is one of my favorite from the class of 2014.  He is a game-changer.  Arbuckle will lead Canadian to 2-0.  The WILDCATS grab the win 35-24!!!
  • Texas high school footballLSG Intern Zach Says: Hard to root against a guy making history, which Stratford coach Eddie Metcalf will do if his Elks steal the win. But unless he is locking down Boston Hudson himself, there is not much he can do about Canadian QB Ben Arbuckle going out and doing his thing. He was killer last week (19/23, 337 yards, 4 TD) and stays hot to lead the Wildcats to victory. Wildcats 38-21.

  • Mike Says: The Wildcats had another great year last year. This years team bring back 17 all-district positions and 2 all-state players. QB Arbuckle and WR Hudson will head up a very exciting offense. They are our #2 ranked team in the state and will battle #3 Cisco for the Regional crown. It looks like a Canadian vs. Refugio championship game.
  • Chris Says:  Canadian looks to have their best team since their championship run (’07-’09) from a few years back.  They bring back more than just numbers of starters, they bring a lot of very talented players.  The will fight to make it out of the Region, but have a good chance to return to the title game.

Notes:
* Their 8 wins last year was the least since 2006

  • Mike Says: The Wildcats are moving back up to Class 2A for the first time in 4 years. The bad thing for 2A is that the last time the Wildcats where in this classification they won the state championship beating Elysian Fields in the Division II 2007 championship. They enjoyed their stay in 1A also going 46-8. With all of that success, they are set for another great season. They will be young with only 8 starters coming back but they will be strong at linebacker and wide receiver. Look for them to go 9-1 or 10-0 in the regular season and fight Cisco for the regional championship.
  • Chris Says: I love me some Canadian Wildcats football.  There, got that out of my system.  :)   Canadian climbs back up to Class 2A and it really shouldn’t matter.  When 8 wins is your down year, you are a pretty solid program.  Sure, they have a lot of youngsters moving up with some big shoes to fill, but that is what Canadian football is about – stepping up and turning it on.  The Wildcats should win their district and could very well be alive four rounds deep in the playoffs.

CLASS 1A CHAMPIONSHIP PREDICTIONS

Here is how LSG predicts the 2011 season will end.

Division I: Clarksville will be the surprise of 2011 after going 7-5 in 2010. They will fall to Canadian in the semifinals but they will all have a great story to tell. Garrison will make their 2nd consecutive trip to the semifinals and will come up short against Ganado after losing to Goldthwaite last season. In the Championship game, Ganado will will make their first trip in history after losing in the semifinals in 2008 and 2009 to a Traylon Shead led Cayuga team. Meeting the Indians will be a tough Canadian team who should win their third championship in the last five years.

Region I Champion: Canadian Wildcats

Region II Champion: Clarksville Tigers

Region III Champion: Garrison Bulldogs

Region IV Champion: Ganado Indians

Championship : Canadian Wildcats win over the Ganado Indians

Division II: Falls City will fall just short of getting a championship game rematch with Windthorst. Tenaha will take their place and play in their first championship game since 1998. They will also get their second shot at Windthorst in a championship game. They lost to the Trojans in 1996 41-12. Windthorst will make it all the way this year after losing to Falls City last year. It will be the Trojans 6th championship appearance. Wellington will be the other regional champ after going 39-5 over the previous 3 seasons.

Region I Champion: Wellington Skyrockets

Region II Champion: Windthorst Trojans

Region III Champion: Tenaha Tigers

Region IV Champion: Falls City Beavers

Championship: Windthorst Trojans win over Tenaha Tigers

Notes:
* They have been in the last 3 state championship games
* Awesome talent for a 1A team in Chappell and Alexander (both are D1 recruits)
* Their new QB will have plenty of great targets like Ramirez and Lewis
* Expect the Wildcat to go 8-2 or 9-1 in the regular season and compete against a few other of the best 1A teams in the state in their own district in Stratford and Sunray
* Another championship game is possible. Once the playoffs start…games vs. New Deal and Albany start showing up in the Area round so it will be a tough road
