Notes:
The Cowboys will be a force in 2010 with 8 returning offensive starters form an 11-2 Regional qualifier team in ’09. RB McDaniel will be the focus on offense and will get to run behind a young but tested line led by Rice and williams. Expect the Cowboys to compete for the district title with Southlake Carroll who they just cant seem to beat very often. They should go 9-1 or 10-0 in the regular season and then be a tough out in the playoffs. A possible first round playoff opponent could be Allen which would be a tough draw. After that Euless Trinity will be waiting in the Regionals or Quarterfinals.

Coaching Changes — Elysian Fields

Elysian Fields has promoted Eric King to be their new athletic director and head coach. He will replace Jack Parker who has been the head coach for the Yellow Jackets for the last two seasons.

Parker leaves after going 11-8 during his two seasons. King was the defensive coordinator at Elysian Fields last season. He has also been an assistant at Jefferson (2-years), Lewisville (2-years) and Coppell (1-year).

The Yellow Jackets are members of District 8-2A Division II along with Harleton, Hughes Springs, Linden-Kildare, Ore City and Waskom. 2009 ended a 3 year winning streak (11-8 over last 2 seasons). They have had winning seasons 14 of last 16 years.

Coaching Changes — Arlington Lamar

Arlington Lamar has named Trent Fuller as their next head coach. He will try to replace coaching legend Eddy Peach who retired after leading the Vikings to a 310-123-6 record.

Peach has been the only head coach at Arlington Lamar since it opened in 1970 and built it into one of the states best programs. He is one of only nine Texas high school coaches to win 300 career games. The 310 wins puts him at #7 on the all time coaching wins list. He was the first though to win all his games in Class 5A. He is one of only two coaches to win 300 games at one program (the other is Charlie Johnston — Childress). His teams qualified for the state playoffs 19 times.

Fuller comes in after being the offensive coordinator at Arlington Bowie where he has been for the last four seasons. Before that he has been an assistant at Colleyville Heritage and Coppell. Trent’s Dad is Dave Fuller who is currently an assistant at Southlake Carroll. His brother is Mike Fuller who is now the head coach at Colleyville Heritage.

Lamar will be a member of District 4-5A along with Arlington, Arlington Bowie, Arlington Sam Houston, Arlington Martin, Fort Worth Paschal, North Crowley and Weatherford. The Vikings have had non-losing seasons 35 of the last 39 years but have been only 25-26 over the last 5 years.

7 on 7 State Championship Division I Pool Breakdown (Pools I – L)

Here are the Division I State Championship pool breakdowns with stats, key players and of course my predictions. (POOLs I – L)

Pool I: Copperas Cove, Jersey Village, Richardson Pearce, Southlake Carroll

This pool features 2 newcomers (Jersey Village and Richardson Pearce) and 2 old-timers (Copperas Cove and Southlake Carroll). Copperas cove is making their 9th overall appearance. They made it to the Semifinals in 2002. Cove will bring lots of talent like RB Brandin Byrd, DB Fernando Smith, RB Will Wright, WR Brelon Chancellor (715 yards rushing in 2008) and QB Cody Vaughn. They went 2-3 against tournament teams in SQT play. Jersey Village will feature TE Ronell Lavigne and LB Steven Williams while fellow first timer Richardson Pearce will being a very dangerous set of passer and receivers. QB Caleb Lewis (3528 yards passing in 2008), WR Blake Jumonville 1367 yards receiving in 2008), WR Josh Gold (1142 yards receiving in 2008) and WR Jake Allen (753 yards receiving in 2008) lead them. Always dangerous Southlake Carroll is making their 10th overall appearance. They were the inaugural champion in 1998. Once again they will be talented and football savvy featuring QB David Piland, DB Kacy Rodgers, LB Mitchell Osborne and LB Lincoln Schick. They were 3-1 against tournament teams and their only loss was by 1 point. This will be a fun pool to watch. Usually you go with the experienced teams but in this one, Pearce has too much talent.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Richardson Pearce 2. Southlake Carroll 3. Copperas Cove 4. Jersey Village

Pool J: Birdville, Edcouch-Elsa, Lewisville Hebron, Temple

Birdville is making their 1st appearance and will feature another great passer and group of receivers in QB Josh Dorman (3630 yrds passing in 2008), WR Cory Hines (1001 yards receiving in 2008), WR Jonathan Dents (838 yards receiving in 2008), WR Clarke Renfro (1087 yards receiving in 2008) and DB Isaac Unesi. They went 2-2 vs. tournament teams in SQT play. One of LSG’s favorite 7 on 7 teams, Edcouch-Elsa will be making their 4th overall and 2nd consecutive appearance. They will be showing off the talents of WR Jesse Jalomo (815 yards receiving in 2008). Lewisville Hebron is making their 9th consecutive appearance at the state tournament. They made it to the Quarterfinals in 2003 and 2007 and will be led by LB Christopher Summers. They played a tough SQT season and finished 4-4 against tournament teams. Temple is replacing Abilene Wylie who will play Division II. This will be their 3rd consecutive appearance and they will bring with them one of the top recruits in the nation. RB Lache Seastrunk (1541 rushing yards in 2008) will be in the spotlight. Other key players will be LB Derrick Davis and LB Stedman Moore. Another first timer with tons of talent will be a pool winner as Birdville takes this one.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Birdville 2. Lewisville Hebron 3. Temple 4. Edcouch-Elsa

Pook K: Coppell, Katy Seven Lakes, Stephenville, Tomball

Coppell will be making their 4th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance, making it to the Quarterfinals in 2007. Their key players will be QB Hayden Hawk and Missouri commitment LB Jared Parham. Coppell went 4-1 in SQT play vs. tournament teams and their only loss was by 1 point. Katy Seven Lakes is making their 3rd consecutive appearance and will bring a talented group but they will have a tough time in this pool. Stephenville is making their 6th overall and 5th consecutive appearance, making it to the Semifinals in 1998, the Quarterfinals in 2006 and the Quarterfinals last year. They have a 2-4 record vs. tournament teams in SQT play this year. Tomball is making their 2nd consecutive appearance. They will be led by WR Jordan Leslie (59-1064 receiving yards in 2008 1st Team All-State) and TE Matt Marfisi. They had a 3-2 record against
tournament teams in SQT play. This one is tough to pick…its another flip a coin.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Coppell 2. Tomball 3. Stephenville 4. Katy Seven Lakes

Pool L: Colleyville Heritage, Houston Lamar, Round Rock Stony Point, The Woodlands

All 4 teams in this pool are in Class 5A. Colleyville Heritage is making their 12th consecutive appearance, having qualified every year!!! They made it to the Quarterfinals in 2002 and the Semifinals last year and in 2005. They were also crowned the 7 on 7 State Champions in 2006. Heritage will be led by WR Jake Skinner and LB Robert Goheen. Houston Lamar will be making their 5th overall appearance and will feature JR QB Bram Kohlhaussen, ATH Darren Ervin, DB Drew Bostick, DB Neiko Conway and RB Patrick Andrews. Round Rock Stony Point is making their 4th overall and 2nd consecutive appearance. They will bring lots of talent like DB Desmond Martin, WR Gerard Shillow (46-796 yards receiving in 2008), DB Kevin White and LB Reshard Asmore. The Woodlands will be making their 10th overall and 3rd consecutive appearance. They made the Quarterfinals in 2000 and 2005. Their stars will be WR Randy Knust, LB Perry Cooper, DB Ryan Clapsaddle, LB Nick Crewe and JR RB Daniel Lasco. Both Heritage and The Woodlands went 1-5 in SQT play. These teams will all play very close games.

Mike’s Picks: 1. Round Rock Stony Point 2. Houston Lamar 3. Colleyville Heritage 4. The Woodlands

Lewisville State Qualifying Tournament Pools

Here are the pools, key players and of course my predictions for the Lewisville State Qualifying Tournament.

Pool A: Coppell, Lewisville Hebron, Plano West, Sherman

Lewisville Hebron has gone 6-7 this year and made the semifinals at the Arlington Bowie SQT. If they dont qualify this year it will be for the first time in 8 years. Plano West has gone 2-4 in SQT play this year while Sherman has gone 0-3 including a 44-7 loss to Plano West. Coppell has already qualified.

Mike’s Pick: Lewisville Hebron

Pool B: Denton Guyer, Southlake Carroll, Flower Mound, Flower Mound Marcus

This pool comes down to Flower Mound vs. Flower Mound Marcus since Denton Guyer and Southlake Carroll have already qualified. Marcus will be making their first appearance in SQT play while Flower Mound has gone 4-2 including a 26-35 loss to pool opponent Southlake Carroll.

Mike’s Pick: Flower Mound

Pool C: Richland, Lewisville, Midlothian, Denton

The host team Lewisville has gone 2-7 this year in SQT play but Coach Dick Olin may have something special planned for this SQT. Midlothian is 3-6 this year including a loss to pool opponent Richland 25-40. Denton lost in the semifinals that they hosted last week to DeSoto. Richland has already qualified.

Mike’s Pick: Lewisville

Pool D: Abilene Cooper, Dallas Smith, Mansfield Legacy, Stephenville

Dallas Smith is 1-5 in SQT play this year while Mansfield Legacy has gone 2-4. Abilene Cooper has already qualified so that leaves Stephenville with a 6-3 record as the power in this pool

Frisco Liberty State Qualifying Tournament Pools

Here are the pools, breakdowns and of course my predictions for the Frisco Liberty State Qualifying Tournament.

Pool A : Frisco Liberty, Plano East, Richland, Rockwall

Richland was the surprise champion last year. They went 2-1 at Arlington Bowie last week so look for them to be a contender in this pool. Plano East will bring lots of talent. QB Brandon Wesley (1721 yrds passing in 2008), WR’s Brandon Lewis and Denzelle White and Kansas committ DB Dayvyon Henry. Rockwall will have a few good targets in TE Adam Dingwel and WR Will Beasley. Frisco Liberty will try to hang.

Mike’s Pick: Plano East

Pool B: Coppell, Lewisville Hebron, Greenville, Lake Dallas

Coppell has already qualified going 4-0 at the Arlington Bowie SQT last week including a 42-26 win over pool teammate Lewisville Hebron. Hebron had a 2-2 record last week before falling to Coppell in the semifinals. Greenville will be led by RB Dakieston Williams. Lake Dallas may bring the best QB of the tournament in James Franklin (5-4A offensive player of the year 2464 yrds passing in 2008 commmitted to Missouri)

Mike’s Pick: Lake Dallas

Pool C: Wylie, Plano, Richardson Pearce, Dallas Strake Jesuit

Wylie will bring a few good targets from their 2008 Division II Runner-Up team in TE Noah Chesier and WR Colby Harper. Plano last some great talent from last year team but WR Robert Robinson and TE Ashton Williams will make them a very tough team to beat. Richardson Pearce will be led by WR Blake Jumonville while Dallas Strake Jesuit will be relying on DB Reed Brezette.

Mike’s Pick: Plano

Pool D: Arlington Sam Houston, Garland, Plano West, Denton Guyer

Arlington Sam Houston went 0-3 last week and will have a tough time competing with the top teams in this pool. Garland will bring some great talent in LB Tevin Jackson OLB (4 star recruit Committed to Texas), WR Adrian Phillips (4 star recruit Committed to Texas), QB Jared Barnett (1376 yrds passing in only 7 games in 2008), DB’s Darius Bates, Tyre Ivey, Adrian Neal and Malcolm Robinson.
