Galena Park North Shore’s David Aymond Gets Promotion

DavidA

David Aymond leaves the sidelines to become the Galena Park ISD’s boys athletic director. He has been the Mustangs head coach since 1994.

North Shore did not make the playoffs in the 31 years before his arrival. Since he arrived, they have made a habit of winning, having won 13 district titles and reaching the semifinals twice. The Mustangs won a state championship in 2003, beating The Woodlands for the Class 5A Division I title. They also had a 78 game regular season winning streak and 8 straight unbeaten regular season from 2001-2008.

Coach Aymond finishes his coaching career with an all-time record of 229-59-0 including a 205-43-0 record with the Mustangs.

  • Mike Says: The Mustangs bring back 11 starters from last years Quarterfinals team. As usual, optimism is high for the Mustangs as they will feature a strong offensive line led by Najee Toran and a fast hard hitting defense led by Zach Whitley. La Porte will be their main competition in district play. Look for them to win the district title with maybe one loss in the regular season. This year they make the semifinals with a win over Houston Lamar who knocked the Mustangs out last year in the Quarterfinals. We have them facing San Antonio Madison which is a winnable game also.
  • Chris Says: Galena Park North Shore is one of those teams that always fields an excellent team and always comes up just a tad short of winning a title (except for that one in 2003.)  This year, they will once again field a very strong team that will fight it out with La Porte for the District 21-5A crown.  The Mustangs will once again go strong into the playoffs and should make it to the semi-finals.

  • Mike Says: My Pre-Season prediction was that this would be for the district title and here we are both sitting at 4-0 in district play.  North Shore will be the district champion with the win.  A La Porte victory puts the district race up for grabs as they play Port Arthur Memorial next week.   La Porte snapped a long losing streak against North Shore last year.  The Mustangs will want a little revenge.   The  North Shore team has a strong running game averaging 320 yards per game.  They will not be stopped as they go 3-0 this year in LSG Games Of The Week.  The MUSTANGS win 31-21!!
  • Chris Says: Last season I would have picked La Porte to take this one because they were on such a huge upswing and North Shore was having a bit of an off year.  This year however, La Porte is having another fine season, but Galena Park North Shore is absolutely lighting things up.  The MUSTANGS take it 35-20!!!

  • Mike Says: This series looks to be going back and forth each year so this is North Shores year I guess.  Both of these teams have been playing great and a win here will go a long way towards the district championship.  North Shore won an earlier Game Of The Week against Manvel in impressive fashion.  They then followed it up with a whipping of Katy Cinco Ranch.    North Shore will prove once again, that they are one of the best teams in the area.  The Mustangs win it 35-20!!
  • Chris Says:  Both Port Arthur Memorial and Galena Park North Shore played Channelview and although PA Memorial scored more, GP had a larger margin of victory.  Frankly, the way Galena Park North Shore has been playing against some really good competition, I can’t see myself picking against them.  The wild card in District 21-5A is La Porte.  I really can’t wait to see what happens when these three teams butt heads.  In this first head butt though, sorry Titans, I have to go with GP.  The MUSTANGS win 24-20!!!

2012 Games:
W 35-21 AT SPRING

This is the first time that these two teams have every played each other.

  • Mike Says: This will be Manvel’s first big time challenge in Class 5A. The Mustangs are always a top team in the Houston area and this year is no different…just ask Clear Springs. They have stars like QB Micah Thomas, LB Zach Whitley and DB Earnest Thomas. The Mavericks won their first 5A game last week @ Spring and they are led by QB Shane McCarley, WR Austin Bennett and WR Kyrion Parker. Its going to be a good one but I do not think North Shore even with that good secondary can contain the Manvel passing game. The MAVERICKS win 32-27!!
  • Chris Says: Manvel was a blast to watch last season and this looks to be just as much fun.  North Shore however, is a team that is just not getting the respect they have in the past.  While it would be a great story for Manvel to come in and roll through Class 5A (like Austin Lake Travis appears poised to do) it just isn’t going to be that easy.  This game will be a great test to see if the Mavericks are good enough to compete with the big boys.  ln the end though, McCarley is that good and will be the difference maker.  MAVERICKS take the victory 31-28!!

* Have gone 5-4 in the playoffs since 2008

  • Mike Says: The Mustangs are a good team year in and year out. This year they will be very young with a lot of juniors playing critical roles. I am looking forward to their pre-district game against Manvel. Look for them to go 8-2 or 7-3 in the regular season and fight La Porte for the district title. They will be a Division I playoff team. Their main competition in the region will come from Pearland.
  • Chris Says: Galena Park North Shore is one of those teams that you dread on your schedule and for that reason, everyone plays against them like it is a championship game.  The Mustangs have never been afraid to schedule tough and for that reason should be playoff ready once the regular season ends.  It mystifies me how they have only managed one state championship in the past 17 years.  Once again, look for the North Shore to light up the regular season with 8 or 9 wins, put on some of the best contests from a fans perspective and have a strong playoff run.  Once again, look for them to showcase some great talent on both sides of the ball, and fall short of a state title – but not by much.

Katy Rolls and Eisenhower blocks Hightower in Houston Area

The Katy Tigers dominated the Galena Park North Shore Mustangs 34-6 Friday night in front of a sellout crowd and LSG was there!!

The Mustangs were held under 60 yards of offense until the 4th quarter. On the other hand, the Katy offense was able to do whatever they wanted.

In other action Aldine Eishenhower won a wild one over Fort Bend Hightower 42-41. Hightower scored with 1:55 remaining in the game but their extra point snap was mishandled and they were unable to tie the game. They got a second chance though and drove to the Eisenhower 7 to set up a last second field goal. That kick was blocked giving Eishenhower the big win.

(Week 0 2011): Galena Park North Shore Mustangs @ Katy Tigers

Texas high school football

Galena Park North Shore @ Katy

Katy leads the series 3-1 including a playoff victory last season over the last 3 years. The Tigers have won the last 3 contest.

Katy won big last year to open the season but their playoff game was a lot tighter.

2008 North Shore 10, Katy 6
2009 Katy 9, North Shore 7
2010 Katy 44, North Shore 6
2001 Katy 32, North Shore 27 Regional Playoffs

Mike Says: Both of the regional powers will start their fourth season against each other. North Shore wants revenge after getting embarrassed last year in week 0. Katy will be at home in front of a sell out crowd and it is a great way to kickoff the football season. Tigers win it 21-17!!

Chris Says: With the exception of the last year’s blowout, these games are always great.    Katy is too much again this year for Galena Park North Shore however as Gary Joseph’s execution and discipline will once again point to a Katy victory 24-10!!
