Melissa Wins The Class 2A DI Title

Melissa Cardinals 2011 Class 2A D1 Champions

Melissa 28, Hempstead 15

The Melissa Cardinals won their first ever state championship with a win over the Hempstead Bobcats in the Class 2A Division I Championship game.  This game featured two teams that had never played in a championship game before.  Melissa began varsity play in 2004.

The first half was a defensive battle with the score tied 7-7 going into the break.  The Cardinals broke it open in the 3rd quarter with 200 yards of offense and 21 points to take a 28-7 lead.

The Bobcats defensive back Tribete Smith had 2 interceptions in the game and returned one for a touchdown was named the Defensive Player Of The Game.   Cardinal running back Kristov George ran for 132 yards and scored 2 touchdowns was named the Offensive Player Of The Game.  George also played a great game at linebacker with 10 tackles.

Hempstead playing in their first championship game had a great year winning their district for the first time in 38 years.  Melissa is now the 5th team to win the State 7-on-7 championship and 11 man state championship in the same year.  They join Celina (2000), Tyler Lee (2004), Celina (2007) and Austin Lake Travis (2010).

The game was played in front of  8,435.

Mike Says: Neither of these teams have had much success in the playoffs until this year.   Its good to see a championship game where neither team has been to the Big Game before.   Melissa has impressed me in the playoffs with wins over 3-time defending champion Daingerfield and our #1 Pre-Season team New Boston.   We predicted Hempstead would make it to the semifinals against Tatum in the pre-season.  BUT we predicted that Tatum would win.  Hempstead came away with the big win to get here though.   I keep hearing the Hempstead fan last week telling us that you got it wrong….you got it wrong….you got it wrong with our prediction of Tatum beating them.   The BOBCATS win 14-12!!!

Chris Says: “You got it wrong… you got it wrong…”  That just keeps ringing in my ears from our December 9th podcast. That Hempstead fan was correct and I will be the first to admit it.  Besides, I loved that call-in…  expect me to be repeating that for the next year or so, “you got it wrong… you got it wrong…”  There is every reason in the book to choose Melissa in this game, but there is something about fired-up fans taking the time to call in or comment (hint, hint) that lets you know they have some passionate support behind their team.  Even if they are riding on passion alone, I cannot pick against that.  The BOBCATS take their first ever state title 20-17!!!!

Who do you think will win? Call in the voicemail line 713-568-6361 or leave a comment here!!!!

Mike Says: This is the game we predicted in the pre-season. The key to this game will be the Tatum offense (33 points per game) vs. the Hempstead defense (7 points per game). I picked Tatum to win this game in the pre-season but Hempstead has proven that they should be here. The EAGLES win 28-27!!!

Chris Says: Okay, Mike has already referenced our preseason pick that saw these two matching up, so all that is left to do is pick the darn winner.  Sure, Hempstead has been rolling through the playoffs with much more ease that Tatum, but they also had a much easier lineup of opponents.  Tatum is right where they expected to be at this point in the season and will continue.  The EAGLES win 21-17!!!
