The Panthers have gone to the semifinals in 2008 and the quarterfinals in 2009. They should win their district but making it to the quarterfinals will be a longshot. There first playoff game will be against a very tough 14-2A DI that includes Rice Consolidated, Industrial and Edna. Expect the Panthers to go 8-2 or 9-1 in the regular season and if they don’t draw a tough first round playoff opponent, could make it three or four rounds deep.

Notes:
Industrial turned things around from 2-8 in 2007 to 10-2 in 2008 and a trip to the reginals. The Cobras will once again battle Hitchcock for the 29-2A championship. Last year they won 42-35 at home…this year the game will be in Hitchcock with everything on the line. Another great game to watch will be against Refugio. These teams will probably both go Division II and could meet up in the Bi-District playoffs. Look for Matt Anderson to get the ball even more this season (2000 yards?) and the Cobras to finish the regular season 8-2 or 9-1.

The Vanderbilt Industrial Cobras (10-1) dismantled Three Rivers Saturday night 36-6 in a payback game that was 13 years in the making. The last time these two squads met was 1995 when Three Rivers took that contest 31-20. Among all the pundits, only Lone Star Gridiron gave them any respect in the preseason, but the rest of the state will have to pay attention now as they are one of only sixteen teams in 2A Division II that remain in the playoffs.
The Cobras led the way behind a dominating running game featuring a host of great runners – Dillon Koop, Austin Smalley, and of course, Matt Anderson (210 yds, 2 TDs.) Industrial ran all over the Three Rivers Bulldogs behind an offensive line that created great openings all night. Running plays accounted for 60 of their 61 total snaps and counted for 471 yards.
As impress was the Industrial defense that held Three Rivers to just 6 points. The “D” was definitely fired up throughout with great plays by Robbie Riehs, Josh Kusak, Tre Flowers, Garret Griffith, Ryan Richter, Jacoby Busselland and a host of others.
Industrial Head Coach, Doug Kuhlman commented after the game, “we’re pretty fortunate, we have a bunch of good kids that play hard. We got a lot of talented athletes. We’re having a lot of fun right now!”
Industrial moves on to face Blanco in a regional game that will be played Saturday at 6 p.m. in Floresville.

Prior to kicking off the season, I placed the Industrial Cobras (4-1, 1-0) at #24 in my 2A rankings while no one else in the state even had them on the radar. In the interest of full disclosure, most of you know that Industrial is the alma mater of myself and my first co-host “Mighty” Mike Wright. I also have to admit that I based my preseason ranking on insider knowledge of Matt Anderson. Not only have I known him for years and seen him light up football fields in the Houston area since the pee-wee level, but he is my nephew’s boy.
So yeah, it was a homer pick. Yeah, it was information that the rest of the sports pundits didn’t have access to. The bottom line though, is that it is good information. Anderson is the real deal – he is capable of not only starting, but leading the team in any of four or five positions. If the Cobras were more of a passing team, and given the opportunity, he could easily win district or better. If he were given a larger share of the carries, he could also make short work of a 2,000 yard rushing season.
Don’t get me wrong – Matt Anderson is not their only weapon – he is just the best one. Quarterback, Austin Smalley improves steadily, and as this team continues to gain confidence and believe in themselves, he will both feed on that and motivate his teammates to do the same. Dillon Koop is running better than he ever has, due in part to his maturation as a runner, as well as the competition presented by Anderson for touches.
Sure, Industrial’s schedule hasn’t been very tough, they have taken it to a lot of low-ranked teams. However, it was the game against Refugio that legitimized them in the eyes of a lot of sportswriters and fans. Despite losing the game 32-18, it took the mighty Bobcats until the fourth quarter to take the lead for the final time.
Going into this weekends games, I have Industrial ranked #18 personally, and the official LSG poll has them sitting at #25. So is this a solid ranking? Is it the view of a ‘homer,’ blinded by being related to the school and one of their star players? Or could it be the real deal? Halloween night, we will find out.
The biggest remaining test on Industrial’s regular season schedule is huge. We are talking #6 Hitchcock! If the Cobras can grab the win or even hold the game close, people are going to have to give them their props.
I, for one, WILL be in attendance for that game.
