Mart PanthersMike Says: We caught a little grief early on for picking Mart as one of the top teams in Class 1A but they have played well this year even with their loss to Dallas St. Mark’s. Rogers comes into this game on a roll scoring 159 points in 3 games. Last year the Eagles Slot-T put up big points (84 points) against this Mart team. They ran wild for an amazing 783 yards in that game. Mart leads this series all-time but Rogers is on a 3 game winning streak in the series. The Panthers were embarrassed last year….it will not happen again. The streak ends and the PANTHERS win it 42-27!!

Rogers EaglesChris Says: Rogers has really turned into a scoring machine the last few years and because of that, this matchup has been a great one.  In fact, last year’s 84-58 win over Mart was one of the most exciting games of the season.  Rogers is still scoring like mad and after Mart’s 71 point performance last week against Riesel, I expect this to be another shootout.  It is the classic matchup where whoever gets the ball last is likely to win.  I think it is going to be Rogers once again.  EAGLES win 45-41!!

Mart PanthersLSG Intern Zach Says: This is a tough one. Rogers has the RB/DB duo of Carson Skala and Brody Malovets anchoring either side of the ball. For Mart, QB/LB DeNerian Thomas is the reigning district MVP and leads a young squad eager to return to the state title game. At home, I like the Panthers to make a statement in this shootout. Panthers 63-59.

Rogers EaglesLSG Intern William Says: Mart has started off to a good 2-1 record. Marts only loss came from a 40-20 loss to a very good St Marks squad. On the other side Rogers won this matchup last year 84-58 and haven’t had many problems through their first three games they’ve had winning without any hiccups. Rogers wins 63-49.

  • Mike Says: The Panthers made a surprising run to the championship game last year. It was only surprising because they were so young. This year a veteran group of juniors and sophomores lead the way. JR DeNerian Thomas, JR LB Collin Nail and SOPH D’Marcus Cosby will lead the Panthers to the Championship game again this year. Their games against Rogers and Goldthwaite will be good ones to watch.
  • Chris Says:  There are a lot of things I love about Mart.  I love the history behind the team.  I love the rabid fan base.  I love the new helmets.  I love the head coach’s name – Rusty Nail!  I love the fact that their first signup for The Brotherhood (Bill McKinney) is one of the oldest members. More than all of that though, I love how good this team is.  The Panthers bring back a lot of talent and there is no reason why they won’t be playing in December.  They have some seriously strong opponents in the regular season and it just gets tougher in the playoffs, but these Panthers can hang.  It is going to a great run.

Stamford Returns And Wins 4th All-Time Championship

Texas high school football state championship playoffsStamford wins Texas high school football Class 1A Division I State Championship

The Stamford Bulldogs won their 4th all-time state championship and first since 1958 during their 35-28 victory over the Mart Panthers in the Class 1A Division I Championship game. Mart was playing in their 9th all-time championship game and now have a 4-4-1 record in the big game.

Stamford quarterback Hagen Hutchinson was the big story in the game. He scored the game winning touchdown with 32 seconds left in the game and then intercepted a last chance pass near the end zone to give the Bulldogs the win. Hutchinson finished the night with 132 yards rushing and 248 yards passing and 4 total touchdowns. He also played an outstanding game at defensive back. The Bulldogs were the state runner ups last season when they fell to Mason 62-40. In that game, Hutchinson passed for 351 yards and had 4 touchdowns while playing with a dislocated shoulder. Mart was defeated by Stamford last season in the semifinals.

Mart led this one at the half 21-13 behind a big game by SOPH QB De’Nerian Thomas. Thomas finished the night with 224 yards passing and 89 yards rushing and 3 total touchdowns. Stamford scored midway through the 3rd quarter and with the 2 point conversion tied the game at 21. Right before the 4th quarter, Thomas scored his last touchdown and Mart led it 28-21 going into the final quarter. One minute into the 4th quarter, Stamford tied it up. Stamfords final touchdown came when they took over at the Mart 49 yard line with 3:08 left in the game.

Hutchinson ends his season with 216 completions on 320 attempts for 2,854 yards and 43 touchdowns passing. He ends his career with 504 completions on 773 attempts for 8.330 yards and 98 touchdowns. The Bulldogs actually won another state championship in 1959 when they defeated Brady 19-14. They were later stripped of the championship.

  • Mike Says: This is Bosqueville’s first showing in one of LSG’s Games Of The Week.   Mart has been highlighted 3 times but have not been on the winning side yet.  This is for the district championship.   Both have dominated in district play so far.  Bosqueville has outscored their district opponents by a combined score of 141-20 while Mart has outscored them 164-20.  Mart has won big in their only other 2 meetings. It will not be a blowout this time but the PANTHERS win it 28-24!!
  • Chris Says: Bosqueville is looking to knock the crown off the king here when they go up against Mart.  In their two meetings, Mart has outscored them 130-0 – YIKES!  Sure, those were different teams, different everything… but I am not sure if the Bulldogs are ready to knock them off just yet.  They are playing almost identical when it comes to district play with the Axtell game being the only one where Mart really did better.  If it wasn’t for the tradition of Mart, I would say this game is ripe for a dethroning.  In the end though, history means a lot in this game.  The PANTHERS win 48-42!!!

Mike Says: Stamford will be looking to go to their first championship game since 1959. Mart is looking to go to their 9th championship game since 1957. Stamford will be led by QB Hagen Hutchinson (2,399 yards 26 TDs), WR/DB Jessie Ramos (79 receptions 1,404 yards 17 TDs, 7 INTs, 41 tackles) and LB Mario Gonzales (139 tackles). The Mart defense will need to come up big against that potent Stamford passing attack. The defense is only give up 12 points per game but they have given up 57 points in the last 2 games. Its time for Mart to play nice and let someone else play for a championship. The BULLDOGS win 26-21!!!

Chris Says:  What a game!  This one is what Texas high school football is all about.  We are talking about two great programs – the old guard versus the recent superstars.  Stamford has been telling the state through their on-field exploits that they are ready to return to dominance.  Mart has been telling the state for years that they ARE dominant.  Is this a passing of the guard?  Will Stamford return to former glory?  Will Mart go back to business as usual?  Both teams have had their hands full when going up against good teams and both teams have managed to come out on top.  I think Mart’s recent run will continue and Stamford will use this year to set the scene for future success.  PANTHERS win 32-28!!!

#6 Goldthwaite Eagles (3-1) @ #8 Mart Panthers (3-1)

Goldthwaite @ Mart

Goldthwaite leads the series 3-1 since 1995 but Marts one win was last years Championship game. Goldthwaite’s head coach Gary Proffit currently has an all-time record of 233-79-3. This puts him in 35th place all-time.

GAMES SINCE 1995:
1995: Goldthwaite 20, Mart 9 Area Round Playoffs
2009: Goldthwaite 21, Mart 17
2010: Goldthwaite 29, Mart 23
2010: Mart 28, Goldthwaite 7 CLASS 1A DIVISION I STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Goldthwaite 2011 Schedule
08/26/11 Thrall W 33-0
09/02/11 San Saba L 29-35
09/10/11 Callisburg W 41-12

Mart 2011 Schedule

09/09/11 @ Dallas Life Oak Cliff W 62-6
09/16/11 Rogers L 42-43

Mike Says: Mart almost pulled it off last week vs. Rogers in one of LSG’s games of the week. Goldthwaite’s loss also came in one of our games of the week vs. San Saba. Goldthwaite will once again rely on a strong running game. Through 4 games they have 1237 rushing yards and only 224 passing yards. They averaged 335 rushing yards in their 3 wins and only 232 vs. San Saba in their loss. RB Gary Head (434 rushing yards), QB Tyler Horton (337 rushing yards 8 TDs), OL Colton Mitchell and OL Sergio Vasquez head up that offense. On defense, LB Mitchell (41 tackles), Head (20 tackles 2 sacks) and Horton (13 tackles 2 INTs) shut opponents down. This may not be the last meeting between these two this year. Goldthwaite gets some revenge after falling to Mart in the state championship game last year buts its not the same. The EAGLES win 28-20!!!

Chris Says: Mart came so close last week that I don’t even really consider it a loss.  Okay, I am sure the boys from Rogers disagree there, but I gotta be me – right?  Goldthwaite’s loss to San Saba was one of those games where the fans convinced me that San Saba could pull off the victory – it worked out for me that time.  It very well could be a sign of the apocalypse – Goldthwaite losing two Games of the Week in one season…  but I have to go with my gut and my gut tells me a) the apocalypse will NOT happen this weekend…. BUT Goldthwaite WILL lose.  MART wins 28-21!!!

Mike Says: This is another great matchup of a small 2A school vs. a big 1A school. Both teams are 3-0 and both are Top 5 in their classes. Rogers wins again but not by as big a margin as last year. The EAGLES win 28-27!!

Chris Says: This is actually one of the tougher games to pick this week. Mart certainly has a team that is capable of playing with the 2A squads, but Rogers is better than they have been.  Once again, Rogers wins this one 38-20!!
