Victoria East Gets Replacement After Finley Retires

2012 Coaching Change: Victoria East Titans

Old Head Coach: Mickey Finley — Retiring after leading the Titans for their only 2 seasons in varsity play. He has led them to an overall 18-7 and 2 consecutive playoff runs. Finley was also head coach at Victoria Memorial from 2007-2009 going 11-19. He was head coach at Cuero from 1992-1998 going 69-23-2 over 7 seasons. He was also at Schulenburg in 2006 going 11-1. Finley ends his career with an all-time coaching record of 214-149-3. This ranks him #57 on the all-time coaching wins list.

New Head Coach: Roland Gonzalez – From 5A Cypress Springs where he has led the Panthers to an overall 10-29 record over the last 4 seasons including going 0-10 last year. Gonzalez has also been the head coach at Corpus Christi Ray where he led the Texans to a 33-20 record over 5 seasons. His all-time coaching record now sits at 43-49. Before taking over as a head coach, he was an assistant at Stephenville under Art Briles.

Team News: The Titans have gone 18-7 in their first two seasons of playing varsity ball after Victoria Memorial was split up into 2 schools.

Mike Says: The closest district game that either of these teams have played this year is a 30 point victory that Schulenburg had over Weimar. The Brahmas will not be able to hang with the Shorthorns in this battle of the cattle. The Shorthorns feature a very good QB in Kyle Bludau (701 yards passing, 240 yards rushing). The Shorthorn defense has only given up 29 points all year is led by LB Colton Bubela (36 tackles, 2 sacks). The SHORTHORNS win 32-20!!!

Chris Says: This will likely determine the winner of District 15-2A as I believe Danbury will finish third in the district. East Bernard was tested early when they missed beating the best team in 1A (Ganado) by only 1 point. Schulenburg’s only real test came against Shiner, which they dropped 21-14. Schulenburg has put up more points while they have allowed less than East Bernard as well. This is one of those games that will come down to one flubbed play. Schulenburg seems to have the better tradition, while East Bernard appears to be more “on a roll.” In the end, tradition and program win out – SHORTHORNS win 24-21!!!

The Associate Press Top 10 polls for Texas high school football are out. Longview jumped up 7 spots into the 5A Top 10, Stephenville dropped several slots after a loss in 4A, Tyler Chapel Hill remains #1 in 3A despite losing QB Avery Saenz, but overall there are few changes across the state’s Top 10.

#1 1A Division I Ganado scored a late touchdown to beat previously undefeated 2A Division II East Bernard 21-20. Ganado’s star running back Josh Labay was again the star for the Indians. He had an amazing 46 carries for 199 yards and 3 touchdowns. East Bernard led in the 4th quarter 20-13. The Indians then went on a 17 play 69 yard drive taking up 8 minutes and 47 seconds to score a touchdown with only 2:59 remaining. They decided to go for two and Labay took it over to give Ganado the 21-20 lead. They held on from there.

Labay now has 573 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns in their first three games.

Schulenburg 21, Shiner 14

Schulenburg quarterback Kyle Bludau scored 3 touchdowns to lead the #2 2A Division II shorthorns to a 21-14 over 1A powerhouse Shiner. Bludau’s final touchdown came with a little more than 7 minutes left in the game. Schulenburg now leads the series 10-6 since 1994.

The Schulenburg Shorthorns History Page Has Been Updated

Coach Tommy Bludau has the Shorthorns ready for a run at the state championship in 2010. They made it all the way to the quarterfinals last year going 12-1 before falling to Refugio.

This season they bring back six starters on each side of the ball and may have one of the best quarterbacks in 2A with Kyle Bludau (over 2200 yard passing in 2010). To go with Bludau on the offensive side, they will bring back 1st team all-district players like TE Logan Lebeda and OL Andrew Syrinek. On defense the returning 1st team all-district players are Bludau at DE, Syrinek, DB Jacob Langhammer who is also a good running back and LB Colton Bubela.

Its going to be another great season for the Shorhorns. We are all looking forward to possible matchups with Lexington or Refugio in the playoffs.
