Class 5A Division II Championship Game: Spring DeKaney 34, Cibolo Steele 14

Southlake Carroll Wins 8th All-Time Championship

Southlake Carroll - Class 5A DI Texas high school football state champ

Southlake Carroll 36, Fort Bend Hightower 29

The Southlake Carroll Dragons won their 8th all-time state championship with a fun to watch 36-29 victory over the Hurricanes from Fort Bend Hightower.   The Hurricanes fall to 0-2 in championship games since they began varsity play in 2000.

Early in the game, Carroll blocked an extra point and returned it for 2 points.  That 3 point swing made a difference all night on whether each team would go for 2 or not whenever they scored.   Hightower led this game 16-14 at halftime and 29-28 after 3 quarters.

The Dragons scored the only touchdown of the 4th quarter and converted on a 2 point conversion to take a 36-29 lead. They were able to stop Hightower and forced a punt.  They took over with 4:42 left in the game.  The Dragons then were able to make several first downs and run out the clock for the win.

Hurricane quarterback Bralon Addison could not be stopped all night and kept the Dragon defenders always a step behind.  Addison finished the night with 184 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.  Dragon quarterback Kenny Hill was the games offensive player of the game with 19 completions on 24 attempts for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He also ran for 116 yards and scored 2 more touchdowns.  Dragon linebacker Will Davis was the games defensive player of the game.  He came up with several key tackles on Addison late in the game.  Dragon wide receiver Sabian Holmes caught 11 passes for 138 yards and 1 touchdown.

42,896 were on hand to see the game.

For the record, Southlake Carroll quarterback Kenny Hill completed 243 passes on 386 attempts for 2,688 yards and 25 touchdowns on the year.  Wide receiver Sabian Holmes completed his season with 85 receptions for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns.  Carroll kicker Drew Brown connected on 2 field goals giving him 17 field goals on the season.

Austin Lake Travis - Class 4A Division I State Champions

Austin Lake Travis 22, Waco Hewitt Midway 7

The Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers completed their Drive For Five with their 5th consecutive state championship with a win over the Panthers from Waco Hewitt Midway.   With the win, Lake Travis becomes the first team to every win 5 in a row.  Only Celina (1998-2001) and Sealy (1994-1997) have won four straight.  This was Midways first championship appearance.

This was a very defensive game where the Cavaliers led 10-0 at the half.  Midway made it interesting though, when they returned the opening kickoff of the 2nd half for a touchdown.   Lake Travis was able to get another field goal and finally a touchdown with 4:40 left in the game to earn the victory.  The Cavalier defense held Midway to 177 total yards and forced 4 turnovers.

LT: FG Marcotte 33

FOURTH QUARTER

Wimberley Wins Defensive Battle

Wimberley Texans - Class 3A Division II State Champions

Wimberley 21, Argyle 14

The Wimberley Texans won their 2nd overall state championship with a win over the Argyle Eagles in what was a great championship game to watch.  The Eagles fall to 0-2 all-time in state championship games.

It was a classic defensive battle in the first half with the teams totaling only 278 yards.  Wimberley went in at the half leading 7-3.  What may have been the biggest play of the game, Argyle fumbled the ball out of the end zone when it looked like they were about to take the lead.  They took the 2nd half kickoff and marched the ball all the way to the Texan 1 yard line.  The Eagle running back looked like he was going to score and was hit right before he crossed the line and the ball was knocked out of the end zone giving Wimberley the ball.  A few plays later offensive player of the game Dennis Smith (he also had 10 tackles on defense) caught a 66 yard touchdown pass to give the Texans a 14-3 lead.

Argyle fought back and made the score 14-11 with 10:37 left in the 4th.  Texan running back Trinity Wilson gave the Texans a little breathing room a few plays later though with a 76 yard touchdown run. Wilson was also a key player on defense.  Wimberley’s Brennan Blakemore put the nail in the Eagle’s coffin when he intercepted a pass with Argyle driving to tie the game.

For the record, Argyle Kicker Cole Hedlund connected on 2 field goals to give him an all-time state record 25 for the year.

Refugio Wins A Wild One Over Cisco

Refugio Bobcats - Class 2A Division II State Champions

Refugio 36, Cisco 35

The Refugio Bobcats won their first title since 1982 and their 2nd all-time with a wild 36-35 win over the Cisco Loboes.  The Loboes fall to 0-4 all-time in champioship games.  All 4 of those games have been since 2002.

The Bobcats led this one 14-13 at the half and as both teams combined for 507 total yards.  The Cisco defense stepped up big stopping Refugio twice on downs inside their own 10 yard line.

Cisco scored first in the 2nd half and put Refugio behind for the first time all season in the 2nd half.  Refugio responded though and scored the next 22 points to take a 36-19 lead with around 10 minutes left.  Cisco came right back with a kickoff return for a touchdown by Sophomore running back Mason Reed who also had over 100 yards rushing.  The Loboes got the ball back and behind the running of Hayden Lewis they scored again to make it 36-33.  On Refugio’s next possession, they went 3 and out and then opted to take a safty when they dropped back to punt to make the score 36-35.   Cisco then took over at their own 34 with 2:22 remaining.  The Bobcats were able to hold on a 4th down and short paly at their own 41 yard line to take the ball over and run out the last 58 seconds.

Refugio defensive back Cory Brown was the defensive player of the game with 10 tackles.  He also caught 6 passes for 110 yards and a touchdown on offense.  Bobcat quarterback Travis Quintanilla completed 20 passes on only 25 attempts for 372 yards and 3 touchdowns to get the offensive player of the game.  Wide receiver Lynx Hawthorne caught 4 passes for 119 yards and scored a touchdown.  Kicker Adolfo Cordero connected on 4 extra points.  The Bobcats finish the seaosn with 891 points.

For the record, Quintanilla ends his season with 195 completions on 285 attemspts for 3,929 yards and 52 touchdowns. Not bad for being a sophomore.  Hawthorne finishes with 72 receptions for 1,777 yards 25 touchdowns.  Cordero ends his season with 94 extra points.

This was 2nd championship won by Bobcat head coach Jason Herring.  He also won one in 2000 while he was at Sonora.

The game was played in front of 10,456.
