PLAYOFFS WEEKK TWO—AREA ROUND

DFW:
5A: Allen overcame three turnovers to oust unbeaten Mesquite 42-28 in the top game on Friday. The Eagles defense held the high-scoring Skeeters to just 205 yards of offense and sacked start QB Alex Cooper eight times. Plano West Sophomore Sotonya Jamabo turned in his second consecutive five touchdown night in the playoffs to lead the Wolves by South Garland 37-27. Desoto won a battle of unbeatens, dominating Coppell 42-14 as Dontre Wilson rushed for 204 yards and scored four touchdowns. Euless Trinity rolled to a 28 point halftime lead on the basis of some big plays and cruised by Mansfield 28-7. Skyline lost the statistical battle to Mesquite Horn, but turned Horn away four times in the Red Zone to win 47-28. Cedar Hill scored utilized an early onside kick recovery to take an early three touchdown lead, and overcame Denton Ryan 48-35. Defending Champion Southlake Carroll QB Kenny Hill passed for 371 yards and rushed for 150, accounting for seven touchdowns and the Dragons rolled by El Paso El Dorado 73-23.

4A: Denton Guyer knocked out three time defending champions Aledo 42-30, rushing for 328 yards with QB Jerrod Heard and RB D.J. Breedlove both topping the century mark. Lancaster ousted unbeaten Lovejoy 41-16 with Demarcus Ayers accounting for five touchdowns. Jabari Anderson had 49 carries for 384 yards, but it was his backup Kevon Mack that scored the winning touchdowns as Wylie East edged Whitehouse 63-56. Tanner Ramsey passed for 311 yards and accounted for five touchdowns as Mesquite Poteet beat Lincoln 48-16. Prosper forced six turnovers and piled up 443 yards to defeat Dallas Carter 50-18.

HOU:
5A: Katy shutout Langham Creek 49-0 with Adam Taylor rushing for 190 yards and three tds. Cy Ranch won a bruising 17-7 game over Memorial, as Keith Ford carried 30 times for 155 yards. Manvel pulled away from Dulles in the fourth quarter on the basis of two Shane McCarley touchdown runs and one td pass by the senior QB for a 39-26 victory. Spring Westfield jumped to a 17-0 half time lead and rolled past Austin Bowie 31-7 to set up a third round meeting with Dallas Skyline. North Shore used a 321 yard rushing game to beat Clearbrook 31-9. Hoza Scott’s three yard touchdown run with 9 minutes remaining was the difference as LaPorte edged Ft. Bend Bush 21-17. Lamar remained unbeaten, turning back Alief Taylor 30-14 despite a 169 yard rushing performance by Trevorris Johnson. Ft. Bend Travis scored touchdowns on three of its first four possessions and went on to defeat Deer Park 28-19.

4A: #1 Pearland Dawson got 222 rushing yards and four touchdowns from James White and turned back a tough Stratford bunch 48-35. Angleton rolled over Tomball 73-35 with QB T.J. Austin throwing for 235 yards and three scores. Ft. Bend Marshall pitched a second half shutout to knock out Texas City 49-28. Rosenberg Terry’s defense came up with four turnovers and turned away a last minute two point conversion attempt to edge North Forest 26-25

CENTEX:
Brandeis turned the big stunner in San Antonio, holding Smithson Valley without an offensive touchdown and knocking out the Rangers 28-20. It reversed a 34 point loss to the Rangers on opening night. Madison kept East Central out of the red zone all night in a 24-0 shutout. Steele pounded Roosevelt 45-0, holding the Roughriders to just 32 total yards for the game. In only its third year of varsity play, Brennan remained unbeaten, taking advantage of three turnovers to turn back Vista Ridge 31-28. Austin Westlake used special teams to route A&M Consolidate 45-2. The Chaparral’s Derek Cohen blocked two punts and tackled the punter for a ten yard loss on another attempt—all in the first half. Pflugerville Connally, minus star QB Dajon Williams (out with a concussion) failed to generate much offense and lost to Nederland 17-10. Leander scored five touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back, beating Hays 60-36. Round Rock Westwood jumped to a 20 point first half advantage and stunned the Woodlands in 5A action 34-26. Nate Grimm rushed for a season high 218 yards and Cedar Park beat Kerrville Tivy 36-22 to advance in Class 4A. Also in 4A Georgetown won a battle of unbeaten, beating Summer Creek 38-21 behind a 313 yard/3 touchdown performance by Jake Hubenak. Elgin upset Barbers Hill 45-21 as Te’Rel Simmons rushed for 137 yards and accounted for four touchdowns. Waco Midway rushed for 403 yards to beat Colleyville Heritage 54-44 despite a 375 yard passing performance by Heritage’s Cody Thomas. B.J. Kelly and De Char Greer combined for 352 of those yards and six scores.

EAST TEXAS:
John Tyler beat Wylie 38-10 in 4A Division I as Greg Ward passed for 223 yards and two scores and Tyus Bowser recorded seven sacks. Kilgore’s stout defense allowed Paris only 52 yards rushing for the game in a 41-14 win over the Wildcats. Gilmer earned a rematch with Argyle but rolling over Atlanta 57-13. The Buckeyes exploded for three touchdowns within a four minute span in the third quarter to turn a close battle into a blowout. Tatum’s defense had three interceptions and an onside kick recovery to oust Godley 41-8. Arp’s Mikechell Potts totaled 215 yards and 4 tds’ in a 53-28 win over Crawford. Mt. Enterprise’s Hunter Ammons rushed for 331 yards on 35 carries and scored six touchdowns in a 46-28 win over Maud. Ammons , a previous Ford Player of the Week is also an accomplished rodeo bull rider. Lufkin ousted Pflugerville 56-42 in Class 5A as Tyler Stubblefield threw seven touchdown passes. Longview pounded out 468 yards (241 of them by Tory White) on the ground to beat Dallas Jesuit 57-25. Jesuit receiver Jake Oliver caught 13 passes to give him 308 for his career and end his high school career as Texas’ all-time leading receiver.

WEST TEXAS:
Abilene beat Arlington Lamar to go to 12-0 as Marcel Porter rushed for 226 yards and Nate Kittley caught two touchdown passes and returned a kickoff for a third score. Wolfforth Frenship beat Clint Horizon 42-14 with D’Maujeric Tucker rushing for 189 yards and three touchdowns. Monahans upset Shallowater 21-7 as the Mustangs star RB Jarek Black left the game in the first quarter with a shoulder injury. Shallowater had six turnovers, two inside the Monahans five yard line.

Other small school results:
3A: Argyle rushed for 290 yards and didn’t allow a point after the first quarter, knocking out Melissa 42-14. Celina’s soph QB Nathan Elliott totaled five touchdowns and the Bobcats beat Dallas Madison 51-20. Stephenville QB Tyler Jones completed 22/29 passes for 460 yards and eight touchdowns (tied for fourth best in Texas history) and the Jackets rolled over Kennedale 56-24. Carthage piled up over 300 yards of offense in the first half and cruised by Taylor 56-21. El Campo RB Jack Davis rushed for 211 yards and three scores and the Ricebirds beat pass-happy Somerset 51-14. LaMarque’s Demun Mercer and Ellis Jones both topped the century rushing mark as the Cougars pulled away from Cold Spring-Oakhurst 35-21.
2A: Travis Quintanilla threw for 443 yards and four touchdowns and Refugio rolled over Rogers 76-35.
1A: West Texas powers Stamford and Munday won easily. Munday beat Wink 63-24 with Dee Paul totaling 300 yards and four touchdowns, while Stamford beat Tahoka 67-13 as their QB Hagen Hutchinson threw for five touchdowns and 314 yards and rushed for 122 and two more scores.
